I'm not going to do your homework for you

If you haven't already, get Java In A Nutshell and the Java Cookbook and settle down for a couple of evening's reading.

We produce an enterprise product almost entirely in Java... allows us to work very quickly and reliably (we're a small company).

Check it:

Java is good to learn as your first language, so if you want to get into development, I would keep at it. It's just a shame that the development tools lag behind Microsoft's. There's always Sun's Java trails.

Sadly, I started on ZX81 BASIC.

I also started on ZX81 Basic.

Now using JBuilder, top tool, although I agree with your comments, Visual Studio is good too - have that on the machine here for when I'm messing with the 1% of our product that's C++.

All the best,

Simon.

I started in ZX81 basic too and have now progressed to C, Perl and Java. Sadly, we also support VB, Cobol, PL/1, Fortran, et al, so you have it lucky just worrying about Java and C++!

*Sigh* Programming nowadays is so much easier with all these fancy IDE's does make it much easier!!!

Hey Jen - at least I can spell!

Simon, as you're interested, I work for IBM in Hursley Labs, just outside Winchester. We work supporting CICS which is a big transaction processing system (and playing on ScoobyNet when time permits!). I obviously don't have as much free time as Jen...

Thumbs up

I used to sit next to the CICS people @ HP when I worked there (1994-5 and 1996-8).

Know Mik Butler or Andy (forget the surname) who did HP-UX CICS?

OK super_si, which bits are you stuck on ?

Simon (P),
I've only been working in this department for 8 months so don't really know many of the CICS developers. We work mainly with CICS Clients and the Transaction Gateway, but I've probably lost you now...
