Default Anyone get the Windows 7 "leak" ?

Bloggers are reporting it's outperforming Windows XP and Vista.
Windows 7 beta 1 performance - How does the OS compare to Vista and XP? | Hardware 2.0 | ZDNet.com

All sounds a little fishy that it was first 'leaked' and now it's benchmarks are proving somewhat positive.

I've had a play with it and it does seem a lot quicker than Vista.

Not tried it yet, (not had time) but I've been hearing good things. The beta still has debug code in it, so the final version should be (in theory) even quicker...

Vista is quicker than XP on a properly configured system, so I'd guess that Windows 7 will be as well.

There is a rumor circulating that the "leak" wasn't a leak as such, in that MS actually allowed it to happen, presumably so people would give it a shot and proclaim it's far better than Vista and almost as nice as XP, if not better.

thought Vista had a lot more background serviices running, which in turned didn't make it run as fast as XP ?

Do ou mean if you go around turning off background services = properly configured ?

Nope, not got any services disabled. Just got all the latest (stable) drivers installed. On my machine, Vista runs noticeably faster than XP especially when running stuff like Premiere and Photoshop. For example, when rendering an hour of HD video from Premiere, it completes about 15-20% faster on Vista than it does on XP. I suspect this is mainly due to the vastly superior memory handling on the newer OS.

Iain, a powerful puter does help thou with the smooth running of Vista. Alot of people will get better performance from XP purely because they are not running the latest hardware, i.e a minimum of core2duo at least 2gigs n a beefy vid card is needed for Vista imo.

Example my old AMD64 3400+ rig ran XP beautifully but Vista lagged n therefore sucked.

I've had the Win7 beta a few days now it is impressive for a beta. Seems slicker in normal use and there are alot of improvements. For example the network icon when clicked now shows all available wireless hotspots which you can connect to immediately. Lots more eye candy n effects to

Very true. Vista runs faster than Xp on my old laptop as well though, and that's anything but powerful (an old centrino with 1gb ram).

Will windows 7 install on a VM? Not got any real hardware free to try it on at the moment.

Even with Aero on? I'm surprised if so.

Apparently yes it works in VM well, but expect some issues

Yep, everything is turned on (including aero). It is an old Dell XPS Gen 2, and has a 512mb 6800 Ultra gfx card in it (so not too shabby). I still use it now for some lower powered games and stuff. Not as good as my newer stuff of course, but it's definitely more stable and runs stuff faster with Vista (32 bit) than XP ever did on the same machine. It may well be down to the drivers of course...

I may give the beta a go in a VM when I get a minute. Always like playing with new stuff. I always expect issues too, especially in a beta

Does this mean that windows 7 will require double the CPU and RAM as per previous releases? Not windows bashing by the way, just a straight question.

Doesn't seem that way. The beta runs faster than Vista does on the same hware by all accounts so far. But u will always benefit from new tech due to the aero interface, which btw is customisable in Win7 now, which is nice.

I tried vista 64 back in the early days and it ran like a dog, as Iain says due to driver issues, since sp1 and the fact that 3rd party companies have finally got off their **** and updated the drivers (why they insist on supporting xp from years gone by and not moving with the times is beyond me, it's not all MS's fault) it now runs like a dream, it'll be interesting to see the new version.

Interestingly on xp the max consistent download i got was 2200kb/s on vista it's 2400kb/s, so they've done some jiggery pokery in the background, i've done no optimizing other than switching of the UAC thingy.

Yes I have. I'm liking it lots. Daemon tools doesn't work, as the services have been changed in Win7 so to be expected, but everything else I've tried does work.

All my Vista drivers worked with W7, including the ATi drivers and Hauppauge sat card drivers. Now you can also stream .h264 videos and TV to the Xbox 360 through media center so I can watch BBCHD on my big telly.

Yea, I will use Vistabootpro 3.3 to take care of the boot.ini when I want to remove the Win7 install.
