any apache/tomcat gurus here?

we have write a small script that will run and check that our apache/tomcat sessions are running, does anyone know how best to pass the request to see if they are still up?
Our original thought was to just check the website was up, but this failed as it uses ssl from the start so the returned data is encrypted, the next idea was as above just to check that apache/tomcat is running.
Needs to be in Java btw just to add anoher complication.

Not quite sure what your requirement is here ?
If you just want a java program that will run periodically and check that your webserver processes are running, then I could knock this up for you in a couple of minutes.
It's quite possible that you are after something more complex, so feel free to drop me a mail at awilcockson@hotmail.com and I'll see if I can help.
I'm bored and looking for something interesting to do in case you are wondering
Andrew.
