Default Thermal Paste

Guys,

Reading through the instructions for my motherboard. It's mentioned that I may or may not need thermal paste for the installation of my processor. Initially I was under the understanding that if needed it would have been supplied with my processor.

So, do i need thermal paste to fit my Core 2 Duo E8400 to my Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard?

Cheers,

Chris.

Yep. always best to apply a thin layer between the surfaces, it does help.

yes you do. There are imperfections in the surface of the CPU and heat sink. You apply a TINY TINY amount of thermal paste to fill in the gaps.

You need a really small amount though. Don't go smearing it all over the heat sink. Just put a small drop in the middle and fit the heat sink.

In the middle only? I always spread it over the surface, as long as it is thin and uniform.

You don't need TIM to fit processor to board, that's just a socket
But if you want it to run for more than two nanoseconds, you'll need TIM between the heatsink and the CPU.

Always best to go to horses mouth:

Actually Intel cores seem to last quite well compared to AMD's without TIM. I'm talking in seconds and minutes here

Ive always smeared it all over the heatsink with an old credit card, so I can get an even surface over it.

Ok guys on further inspection I have noticed that there is "grey stuff" on the bottom of the CPU fan. It's evenly spread as in this pic:

Do I still need to install some thermal paste onto the CPU?

Cheers.

The grey stuff sounds like its paste, most of all new heatsinks ive seen has it pre-fitted.

I would say bung the heatsink on now, there will be enough on it.

If this is an new intel fan and heatsink as supplied with the CPU, it is pre loaded in three stripes like you've got.
When you put it on and clamp it, the paste will get squished to form the layer required, you don't need any more.

Henk, Yeah i can confirm that it is a brand new CPU and HS.

Looks like I'll be putting it in as it is.

Yep, go for it.

If you decide later to change the heat sink or cpu and separate them, you'll need to clean and reapply new but you're good to go now.

Right another stupid question but here I go....

As far as i was aware you need a speaker to hear the BIOS beeps. Now i've just noticed my case doesn't have an internal speaker ,as I though it would have? Is this normal?
What other means is there of hearing the BIOS Beeps?

i have a tube of this stuff from about 10 years ago, you would have to be a diehard cpu swapper to use it all up as it lasts for ever lol

I would expect a speaker.
You can buy small piezo ones but just find someone with a dead machine and rip out the speaker from it.

it gets pressed out and fills in the gaps as it goes, best way to assure a uniform and sufficiently thin layer

mmm well I've always been taught to spread it thin, that way you know the whole area is covered on initial startup, bit like priming an engine for an oil change without the plugs in
