Default XboX Connectivity To A Vista PC Host

Hoping someone can help me with this.

I have an xbox connected to my TV and my computer (the latter via a wired network) to enable me to stream videos off the pc to the tv via the xbox.

This system worked fine without a hitch for 3 years while I used XP as the host OS on the pc. Now that I have moved to Vista 64 bit, I cannot connect to the xbox even though I can ping it from the pc.

My gut feel tells me that this is an access/permissions thing within Vista, even though the folder the xbox needs to access on the pc is shared with full permissions set. Have tried a few things including creating a dummy user account on the pc with the xbox's user name and password but no joy.

Anyone got a solution for this please? Appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance.

You need to go to Windows Media Player, Library, Sharing and select your Xbox 360.

This will allow you to share Music, Videos and pictures.

Have you set up the Xbox with WMP11 to allow the Xbox to share your media?

The folder you are sharing has to have "everyone" added to the permissions I believe, and then set your required security level, co-owner or reader etc.

Well that's how I got my shares working from Vista box to XP box anyway.

Is it an Xbox (running XBMC) or an Xbox 360?

Guys,

Thanks for the many responses, much appreciated. To go through each in turn:

@ Ash - no mac address involved. This is running off a wired network. TV is miles away from the PC and I don't fancy having to dig through the walls yet again to run a different cable

@ boxst, chrisowe - no, not done the media player trick yet. Happy to try this if it works; however I have never had to resort to media player in the past. All I have had to do is to set up share privileges on the required folder on the pc, then use the XMBC menu on the xbox to directly access and stream the video content. I much prefer that to streaming via WMP; however if needs must...

@ bioforger - did exactly what you suggested before I posted so no joy there I'm afraid

@ RB% Black - ok, not thought of that. Again if that works...

Will be back later to let you know how I have got on with the various suggestions.

Any more?

WB

PS - Oh, its an xbox running xbmc, NOT an xbox 360

What version of XBMC are you running? You might want to google "t3ch" and download his latest stable build of XBMC and update to that and see if that helps at all.

However, I *think* it might be something to do with Vista and Samba, specifically due to Vista being set to only use NTLMv2 as an authentication method, and Samba doesn't support this, well, samba in XBMC doesn't.

Have a look at this and follow the steps and see if that helps at all.

Default Update

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. None of the suggestions worked. Sick to death of all the fiddling around I have had to do.

Have taken a practical way out and brought an old pc running xp back into play for the sole purpose of linking into the xbox.

Job done but not the solution I was looking for.
