Question HELP! I think my pc has died!!

Guys,

Main pc at home seems to have developed a weird problem that hopefully someone may be able to say for defo what they think it is.

Noticed a funny thing starting to happen a few days ago where I would switch the pc on and it would run tho it's bios post but when it came to booting the OS it would say something like "can't find valid boot partition". If I then powered it off and left it for a few seconds, powered it back on i would boot up fine.

Then last weekend I was listeneing to a music cd on there and half way thro the 2 nd song the machine just power cycled and rebooted itself. Powered it off and then back on but now when you power it on it fires up the monitor and shows up the "Award Bios" yadda yadda yadda but when it comes to finding the HDD's and DVD/RW's it stops. No response from keyboard, nothing. Just tried powering it up now and it is varying between either doing what I just described OR just not powering up the GFX adaptor at all. The CPU fan still spins and power is getting to the HDD's and DVD drives.

It just basically lists the P4 2.4 Ghz CPU and stops there!!!!

Anyone got any ideas? I think it may be either the CPU or perhaps the motherboard is on it's way out?

HELP!!

Andy

Wont be the CPU, it wouldn't do anything at all if that was the case.

More likely to be badblocks on the boot HDD.

Gfx card maybe, or RAM then. Process of elimination unfortunately.

If in doubt... take the ****** apart and plug it all back in slowwly

Fixed it!! I have a DVB Tuner card which has the power switch routed via it and then back onto the motherboard. Connection somehow had become dodgy... removed and plugged it all back in and she's up and running again

With Mrs T4 about to give birth in a few weeks I REALLY didn't wan to start buying a new pc right now - baby stuff is raping my bank account

Cheers

Andy
