Default Im on 02 can i just buy an iphone?

My friend is selling his 2 week old iphone, its not been unlocked in any way as he was on 02 also, hes upgraded to the new 3g model so this is surplus.

I currently have a 2 month old N95 8gb but I really want an iphone!

How much is each phone worth to sell on? and can i just bang my 02 sim in his iphone and im done?

Honest truth is your better getting a 3G Iphone over the 2G version, its a far better phone considering, and at the moment the N95 is a better all rounder over the 2G Iphone.

You may be better just getting the pay as you go iphone if you want one (19th sept) or stick with the N95 (or wait for the N96 to come out).

"the N95 is a better all rounder over the 2G Iphone."

I beg to differ, it may have a few features but they're unusable.

Well you may not think so, but the N95 has built in GPS, the 2g I phone does not (most people like this function for things like tom tom etc), browsing the internet is somewhat quicker on the N95 over the 2g Iphone due to it being able to connect to a 3g network
Trust me, the N95 is a better all round phone over the 2g Iphone.
The 3G iphone has on the other hand improved in these area's, hence making it better but still slightly flawed over its rivals (as it does not support HSDPA for instance) but its applications are probably the best on the market.

As I said, they're unusable. I tested the speed of the N95 verses my old iPhone. My iPhone had loaded the page before the N95 had loaded it's browser. Subsequent pages were a bit quicker, but fiddling about entering web addresses put it behind the iPhone again. And it's the same with all the functions, they may well be there but you give up using them as they're such a hassle.

I'll give you Tom Tom, no denying that would be a handy app if I didn't have a Tom Tom. But still doesn't make up for the lack of usability verses even the old iPhone.

Well it takes about 12 secs for me to log onto O2 wap and about 5 secs to pull up the BBC webpage after putting the address in manually, not quite as quick as that on the 2G iphone
I should add that i do have my N95set up for duel band so if its on 3G like it is just now, it will be pretty quick and we are in a very good coverage area (like the mast is on the roof )

How do you quantify the N95 being a better all rounder?

mines on Voda

ok its got a 5mp camera, (have you used it) in daylight its good, low light, and the auto focus is a pita,

Mapping, slooow and you have to pay for guidance.

3G, don't make me laugh, wheres the speed? i cant get live tv, as i,m

supposedly not in a 3G area ( i am btw)

It repeatedly falls back from 3G to 2g

Surfing,...

Voda live as a front end is pants, and aimed at 13 year olds who want

banging tunez, or football news.. its a pita to surf normally, distinct lack of

standard browser buttons/ options ie no back button on the browser bar.

Any pages it loads, it shows as as available for a tab back, but insists on

reloading the whole page from the web.

I downloaded opera, whilst its marginally better than VL it still has some odd

quirks, no back button!!!

BUT the biggest gripe about both packages IS

NO KEYBOARD!!!!!!

if you switch to landscape mode to surf, you've got to keep turning the

bloody phone back to portrait and open the keyboard to type either via

predictive text or abc text to enter anything.

Signed applications, once again these supposed "uber" phones are locked

to prevent you putting on apps you want.

i gave up trying ages ago, as half the stuff i want on, has to be signed or is

out of date ffs, and to install a small proggy, involves a whole evening on

the web, loading this , deleting that, waving the phone in the air, checking

a file size etc etc.

media player is good btw, but has some daft quirks which are really

annoying, ain't they nokia!!!!!!! battery life is poor imho

next upgrade, i'll prolly look at an I phone

The N95 is a better all rounder than the 2G Iphone, the 3G iphone on the other hand has looked at, and enhanced the phone to what it should have been like in the first place!

Camera, well not available on the Iphone 2G..... 1 up for the nokia (which does video also )

3G, 1 up for the Nokia.

Now 3G and 2G and the reason you are changing between them, its quite simple, your probably on the edge of the 3G zone (or near it), so ill do some explaining to why they probably say your not in a 3G zone Mart

2G and 3G differ to how they work in the respect that a 2G cell footprint is a set area, ie it may cover 4km, the 3G cell footprint wont be as large but thats not the biggest difference, that comes with the fact that the 2G cell keeps that (example) 4km footprint no matter what, the 3G footprint shrinks the more users there are on it, hence if you are at the edge of a cell or near the edge it will change because the cell is shrinking due to the ammount of users.

Now im on O2 as a network, I can definately say that the N95 is faster but we do have a few cells on the roof so im at the pinical here, if your planning to get an Iphone and use it on Voda though, forget it, they dont have Edge implemented because they dont need to have Edge implemented due to them having 3G.
Edge was/is what they called 2.75G, it was the quickest thing you could get pre 3G, but with the ammount of 3G cells that are out there now for data and the use of wifi spots, its not really a viable option in most cases (plus the network operator has to pay for it to be added), hence you may find that your stuck with just 2G, which isnt very good for downloading anything

Battery life, and yes the N95 does suck, but it does have a similar battery life to that of the Iphone, both are a bit power hungry, especially if you start using applications.

Now if you want my advice (and considering I work in the telecoms industry) dont go for the Iphone on Voda, go try out one of the HTC series (which I also have), my biggest gripe about those is that the screens are not the most robust (but they are getting better) and they are a bit crap in the sunlight, BUT the ammount of applications you can put on them is pretty amazing I dont know of one that makes the Iphone into a wireless router but you can stream tv onto one of these as they use 3.5/3.75g (HSDPA), and some even have a full size keyboard (plus touch sensitive screen) though these too are a little power hungry

I'm less than 1000 yards from the nearest mast/ cell, so deffo not on an edge

of a cell.

When i had my palm trio, i was surfing and emailing every day, with the touch

screen & the built in keyboard it was a dooddle.

obviously it was before data plans were the rage, so it got a bit costly!!!

Come the updated trio, all that improved was the camera, not much use to

me at that time.

Then they dropped the touch screen, and went uber choclate bar, killed

the concept stone dead if you ask me (blackberry chasing)

The iphone would be a major contender, if they opened it up to the other

networks, but like apple, voda & orange insist on there own front end and

options, which hobbles half the new phones out there.

Now an iphone with a 5+ mp camera, hidden keyboard, and more interface

options (no locked apps or other resreiction) would get my vote.

btw htc look good, but the screens are tiny!!

Mart, depends if your nearest cell is a 2g or 3g one (ive a book with all the different types of cells knocking about some where in here, right spotter eh! ) but know what you mean about the front end options, can be a real nightmare

O2 is the official network for the iPhone in the UK, so there should be no problem with activation, but you might want to phone O2 and ask them just to make sure. My only thought is in regards to the data side of things. If you don't have a data plan and you use the EDGE side of things (I know the 2.x.x firmware allows you to disable this, think pre 2 might also - this is regardless of the iPhone type btw) then you will probably be charged a fair bit, so, as mentioned, either turn EDGE off to prevent you using it, or get a data plan if you don't have one.
It's at this point that I'm not sure if you can just get any old data plan, or if O2 will be gits and try and force you into some special iPhone data plan, can't see why really, data is data.
