Widescreen monitor
If I buy a 1680 x 1050 widescreen aspect ratio monitor, will an approx 5 year old graphics card be able to power it? Will everything be distorted or will the monitor 'know' that the feed is say 1280 x 1024 and leave black bands at the side.
Does the graphics card have to have specific modes for a widescreen monitor?

Yes, the card must support the appropriate mode. You can find this out now if you goto the card's manufacturer's website and get their latest drivers.
Once installed, and even when plugged into your existing monitor, you should be able to see which modes it supports.
