Default USB not recognising things?

On my PC.. anything you plug into it recently won't work.

Doesn't matter if you run drivers first etc, it just never works anymore.

Tried all the USB ports as well.

Say you get a new phone or camera and run the software, then connect it the USB see's the device then a box pops up saying 'a problem occured during hardware installation, your new hardware might not work properly' It tries to run the setup wizard rubbish too.

I've checked the device manager and it appears to me that the USB 2.0 driver is missing! (The USB ports are USB 2.0)

Now, I've trawled the net and can't find anywhere to download this. It seems it was in XP SP1, as we have updated to SP2 we can't add anything from SP1 as it says it's for the wrong service pack!

Is there anyway to sort this?

Yes, the Host controllers may need renewing for your motherboard.
Have a look at your motherboard manufacturers website, download the chipset software such as Hyperion 4in1 etc, then run it.

This happened a lot for SP2 after upgrading from SP1.

Thanks for the reply..

It's a compaq presario sr1119uk

I went on the compaq site and found all the downloads they have. There is nothing that relates directly to USB as far as I can see..

Maybe you could have a look and see what I need to download?

USB is generally covered by chipset software as its embedded on the board.

Remember to unplug all USB etc from your PC while doing this.

I tried it and it just came up with a box saying

'the original drivers are stored in the C:\HP\Drivers\Audio folder. Please install the driver through the device manager

The thing is USB 2.0 is missing from the list in device manager.

I've tried updating all the rest that are in the list but it just says all have new drivers. I just need to know how to get USB 2.0 back

Still no joy!

Every time you plug something USB related in (except mouse) it seems like it's going to work ok (ie little bubble box pos up down bottom RHS and says USB storage device found) then it suddenly brings up the windows wizard window! From there it's game over. So annoying.

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried adding the USB device in device manager?
Add the device then point to the folder where you extracted the drivers from the chipset.

Not sure.. I don't use it myself, I have my laptop and the mrs is on the PC. Just heard her moan about it a few times then we tried to put her new phone software on the other day with no joy. I bought a USB card adaptor for her to hope that'd work ok but same prob (works fine in my laptop)
