[Apple] iPhone 2.0 Firmware/OS Unlocked
Well, it seems the iPhoneDevTeam were hard at it and have unlocked and jailbroken the v2.0 software/OS. It's said they will shortly be releasing their Pwnage tool.
It's not of too much use right now, as you have to purchase a contract to get an iPhone 3G, however, it will allow you to add apps other than those available at the App Store.

Got mine but can't register the damn thing as iTunes is playing silly buggers.
part of the activation process is to choose your location, so I select UK, on the next page it always resets back to US and I can't continue until a valid post code has been entered....

I presume we'll see it released once they have had someone try it on a store fresh iPhone, just in case the firmware/OS is slightly different to the latest, but I don't think it will be.
Yes I saw the kiwi site where they tore the poor iPhone apart, no respect for the ickle thing I believe I have a thread about it
Mr Toblerone speaks the truth! I picked up the habbit from hackintosh, where they get *very* funny if you don't tag thread titles correctly. It's probably overkill for iPhone stuff, but fftt.
Depends what you mean general release. If you mean a separate downloadable file, well, a link was posted (have a read of this thread) to it, though until someone checks the launched iPhone, we won't know if the version numbers match, but someone has probably already checked this by now.
The normal method of updating would, I presume, involve connecting the iPhone and using iTunes to download it. So providing Apple has updated wherever iTunes is looking for the software, it should be there. I'm sure someone will extract it and post a link to it somewhere else though.
It would not surprise me if Apple's cocked up here and it won't work until it's go time in the US, wether that'll be PST or EST I'm not sure. Another thought is, are you logged into the iTunes music store with a US account? If so, logout and login with a UK account, see if that makes a difference.
If you want a US postcode/zip code, you could use 62236, which is located in Columbia, IL (Illinios)

Well it doesn't like you then, does it!
I presume you're running iTunes 7.7? Part of me wants to suggest popping iTunes into store activation mode, and then trying it, but I obviously don't want anything untoward to happen to the phone. If you fancy giving it a shot, try the below.
Instructions on toggling the StoreActivation Mode and StoreGenius Mode:
[Thanks to ChronicProductions]
== Introduction ==
Execute these commands in Terminal
== Store Activation Mode ==
=== On ===
In terminal:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes StoreActivationMode -boolean YES
=== Off ===
In terminal:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes StoreActivationMode -boolean NO
== Store Genius Mode ==
=== On ===
In terminal:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes StoreGeniusMode -boolean YES
=== Off ===
In terminal:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes StoreGeniusMode -boolean NO
My final thought is to pop along to a store O2/Carphone Warehouse and see if they can activate it, however, they'd just be using iTunes set to StoreActivation mode anyway. Worst case they might swap your phone for another one, but I doubt it. Plus I'd expect to wait a fair while.

It gets better..
gave up with the new iphone and went back to my old one. Just plugged it onto the computer and it said that the version 2.0 software was available..
It downloaded etc and installed on the phone but the next part was connecting to itunes and ofcoarse I got the error box again. y old phone was mid way through the new software and appears to have got to the reset of the phone before this error haulted proceedings!
It's now also locked out like the new iphone, emergencey calls only screen and asking you to connect to itunes!
FFS. Really good stuff when your mrs is overdue to give birth and you need your phone!!

And as far as I can work out you can't restore the phone to V1 firmware either.
