Zone Alarm problem - new Windows patch
Hello
My home machine had one of those Windows patch thingys install itself this morning - you know, the ones that install when you shut down.
When I came to use the machine again I was unable to go online. Eventually I discovered that shutting down Zone Alarm solves the problem, but thewn I've got no firewall in operation which is not really a good idea.
Anyone else had this problem or can anyone suggest a way round it? I tried uninstalling then re-installing ZA but made no difference.
Failing that is there any other decent free firewalls out there I could try instead?
Cheers

Just stumbled on this on the BBC technology page and remembered seeing this topic in here. Have tried everything over the last 36 hours to connect using the home desktop.
Gave up in the end and found the wireless connection using my macbook was fine.
Have now removed the latest windows security update and all works fine again.
Bloody Microsoft... mutter... mutter.... indeed.

Not sure MS is to blame on this one. It was because of a security flaw on the interweb (nothing to do with MS). Lots of software has had to be patched because of it. It just turns out that the windows patch made some changes which broke the Zone Alarm firewall, (although you could apparently get around it by temporaily reducing the security level in Zone Alarm).
As mentioned, the new version should have this fixed.
