My wife is going on maternity leave soon, and has said she "needs" a laptop to stay in touch with friends / use the internet. Taking into account prams and the like spending on a laptop is way down the list.

All we need it for will be;
E-mail
Internet - no videos, but interesting pictures ..................
Loading CD's onto MP3
Storing photos of wor kid.

I do not need all singing / all dancing but what would be a reasonable spec that would cater for the above, be able to run spyware/anti virus etc without becoming so slow it is useless ?

What should I be looking for ?

I would say pretty much any of the Dell's, HP's, Acers, Fujitsu's, Toshibas that are around the 300 quid mark

They are all pretty much the same spec, processor and hard drive, and screen

I would try and get one with a pentium dual core rather than a celeron though, you will thank me later if you do

what is the spec of the n610 ? any wireless or can wireless be added

 

The n610 is a 1.4M, 512 RAM and a 40 gig hard disk,no wireless but you can buy PCMCIA ones now for £10 (as you prob know)

Cheapest you can get is with AOL, giving them out free. You have to sign up for 18month, but if you would have done that anyway, its OK.
Might be an option for you.
