hi folks

the motherboard on my laptop is buggerd and the local pc shop has offered to buy it for parts (£75)

before i do that i would rather get rid of all my personal docs from the memory.

how can i do this bearing in mind that the damn thing won't boot up?

ps dont buy a sony vaio

Ask them to give u the HDD when they strip it? Or if u dont trust them, take it out yourself before handing it over, its not hard to do.

Take out the hard disk, run very, very strong magnets over it or microwave it, then put it back in.

Collect £75 and run

nah mate, erase the hard drive and then erase the hard drive again using a low level hard erase.

£75 quid sounds a lot for parts as with a fubarred mb, the only "parts" are really screen, kb, memory and disk. Are you sure they're not trying to pull a fast one?

Check on ebay to see what working ones of the same model go for.

thanks folks

i have been on a few pc forums (incl. club vaio) for advice and all seems to point towards the motherboard. the shop just confirmed it after stripping it down.

nothing on ebay at the moment and aparently it HAS to be a SONY mb which ONLY Sony provide circa £500.

the chap has been very helpful and upfront and .i thought £75 was a good price but just dont like the idea of somebody getting my hd with some of my personal correspondance (identity theft paranoia kicks in)

think i'll take it into the mri scanner in work - can't get a bigger magnet than that.

cheers

Fair enough, my thought was they snap it up for 75, do a quick fix and sell it on for 500.
Need to stop being so cynical
