Get one of AOL free. If you ditch your existing contract or renew your contract with them to stay with them for next 24 months (they are giving very reasonable offers through Carphone Warehouse), and get HP notebook wireless with WindoVista free. I have just got one for my kiddo. It's good Not sure aBOUT dvd-r though.

Some here might say that AOHELL sucks. It may do, but it has been ok for so many years for me.

Not just watching dvd's as I have a portable dvd player. I want a lap top so it does not take as much space up as a pc. Going for a minimal look in the new house.

Doesn't need to be a laptop to be minimal...

Go wireless to make it really sleek

How about a Mac Mini tucked into the hifi/AV gear, DVI-HDMI to a plasma/LCD, toslink to AV surround sound and wireless keyboard, mouse and remote

If you want minimal, one box the size of 6 CD cases will handle TV (PVR), movies, music, pictures, email, net and all office requirements for the home.
