Default Wireless networking without a router is it possible?

I have a pc running XP pro with a wireless lan card in it and a laptop with XP pro which also has a wireless lan card built in
Now they can both see other networks close to me but they carnt see each other and no matter what I try I carnt get them to work
Do I have to have a wireless router to connect them?

Not if your hardware supports ad-hoc mode, which a lot does. I think the networking wizards built in to XP/Vista can walk you through how to set it up. I've not tried it myself as I've always had a router or access point.
