importing outlook to new computer
Hi
Using Microsofts instructions 'how to manage .pst files' , I copied my old computers ' outlook ' and ' archive ' data files onto my flash drive.
i then used the import function within Outlook on my new computer. I successfully imported 'outlook data files' , although it stopped halfway with a failure, requesting i update my Vista operating sytem. it then worked okay.
The problem came when i attempted to import my 'archive' data file.
As per instructions i went to 'import and export' . Clicked 'import from another program or file' , then 'next' then clicked 'personal folder file' , then 'next'. Browsed until i found my 'archive' data file on my flash drive and clicked next. Somewhere, probably after browsing and selecting 'archive data file on my flash drive, there was a drop down menu with 3 or 4 choices. i left this on the top one (think it was 'personal folders). All this worked okay with my ' outlook' data file. There was i think, something about archive on the drop down, but chose not to use this because i thought both were in personal folders.
When it finished i got an exact copy of my 'outlook dat file' folder tree ie inbox , sent items, drafts etc ! I am sure i choose my 'archive ' data file.
Now it will not allow me to do anything. It says something like ' you cannot put this destination path into the same path'.
i looked for 'delete' to remove this second identical folder tree (it has all my emails etc which the first one has) but found something like remove or disable, not exactly sure what it said. used this and it ''removed'' my second tree. do not know where it has gone to or if it has been deleted or just put somewhere else. still could not do anything.
i thought of finding my 'outlook data file' deleting it and starting again, but i have not yet found 'application data' on Vista. I found it on explorer on my old computers XP system. Not sure this would 'reset ' Outlook anyway, so i could start again.
Please, any sugestions to get my archive date on my new computer?

Hi I suggest that you go to the control panel and make another Outlook profile under the mail tab. Then open this profile and try importing your personal folders again. Make sure they are collapsed and that you have selected everything.
If you dont want to do this, uninstall outlook and reinstall and try again.
