Default And they say 360's are unreliable!

Lastnight my three week old PS3 decided to stop reading or even acknowledging it had a Disc inside it while playing GT5.

I took it back this morning and got a replacement PS3 to be told theres a sudden spate of failing PS3's but hardly any 360's coming back for faults.

Hmmmmmmm.

No Problem with my or my Sons PS3. My 360 has gone back twice - my sons launch machine finally broke last weekend.

Well playing Halo 3 this weekend my 360 froze twice at about the same point in the game. totally locked up. Had to power off and on from the front button. Is this the first sign it's on it's way to RROD?

Idling and dvd playback is silent, it's the games that force the dvd to spin full whack constantly which are noisey

Is it the norm now to expect console to break after 18 months or so???

My cousins daughter is still using her original ps1.

Seems to me we just except it?

I was expecting it due to the poor reliability record. If I was to pay for the repair I'd be unhappy. As it is I feel it's poor but at least I know it will be repaired FOC.

i love my xbox and wouldnt have a ps3 near me but lets face it they are pure pieces of plastic turds! The PS3 would have to be a complete bag of **** to anywhere near as unreliable as the 360

There's the old towel trick which sometimes works - cover all the vents up and leave it for half an hour - the heat resets it.

Still, at least the RROD is covered by 3 years warranty now so it shouldn't cost you anything.

I got a falcon to replace my still running launch day model (so I can use HDMI connection) also hoping it would be quiet.
I'd say it makes as much, if not more , noise as my old machine. That includes when it's sitting just showing the dashboard.

Plus side though is the picture quality through HDMI, far sharper and much brighter colours on my TV than through component with the old machine.

Anyway - back to the failing PS3s

I've noticed little if any difference between HDMI & Component. However, I think it may be something to do with the Component being at 720p and the HDMI upscaling to 1080p - I think it might be that the 360's upscaling ability isn't very good. The firmware updates to the PS3 have focused on upscaling in the past - MS haven't done anything to the 360 since 1080p was first supported IIRC.

Considering I've had to unplug the PS3 to use the 360's HDMI, I'm going to go back to component.

The only thing I've noticed to improve is the writing during the loading screens on Blacksite. I might try dropping it back down to 720p first before abandoning it though, I've been working on the wife to let me have a new 7.1 amp with hdmi switching - if she twig's on she might not let me

Hah, amateur. I'm on my 10th

I've not noticed any difference between hdmi and component. My set only does 720p/1080i though so it might be more evident at 1080p?

How long do the emailed labels take to arrive. They said 48 hrs but the woman didn't fill me with confidence on the phone.

You can register online for the RROD return. Saves having to endure the call centre!
Although to be fair, my labels arrived in 24 hours and the 360 was collected and returned in 2 weeks (motherboard replaced)

I want it collected and returned to my work though. Looked at online and thought could only use my home address?

I did my return on Xbox.com, no need wait in a call queue to speak to numpties any more

My new Elite is a bit noisy when running a disc, but very quiet otherwise. Hasn't missed a beat . . . . yet

I've been looking at that one seeing as you can pick it up for about £250 these days, only black mark against it is that it doesnt do DTS HD MA, which the PS3 does as of today - if I'm getting a new amp I might as well get one that does everything, which means going up a level to get the new 3300ES.

I think it also depends on your tv. Mine s a Hyundai A321 - at the bottom end of LCD's. I don't think its internal electronics are as good as the more expensive tvs.
A mates Samsung LCD looks as good on component from the Xbox as mine does from HDMI. My Xbox is set to 720p output and looks great at that.

I'd love a PS3 for the Bluray and some of the games but it's just too pricey. Shame there isn't a 360/PS3 combined console

TV's a Sony Bravia - 40W2000, What Hi-Fi award winning jobbie.

FWIW - I've been so impressed with Blu-ray that a PS3 is worth the money for that alone IMHO. Definately worth getting if you have a 1080p telly even if you're still unsure about the whole Hi Def thing - it'll certainly show you how good a picture can be.

But I still prefer the 360 for gaming, got 2 of the buggers...
