Default Odd issue with NAS and macs...very weird

Have got a client that connects via macs, running various levels of OSX to NAS units. All connect via AFP not SMB, so no issues with odd unix files appearing.

but lately they have a spate of these little buggers appearing

whereby the files themselves are intact but there is no app to open them. If you know the file extension then you can open them, but it seems like some weird corruption going on.

any one have some idea what the blue blazes is happening ?

Is it the files that are appearing, or the icon on the file?

some of the files have this icon instead of the usual icon displayed. getting info on them comes up with the same unix executable info that you sometimes get if you connect to a share using SMB instead of afp, but those I have seen before as they are the grey ones with exec in the corner. These little beggers I have not seen before.
