Unhappy R.I.P. my launch day 360 :(

Probably my own fault....firstly for tempting fate with a recent post I replied to suggesting I had one of the only launch day machines that hadn't had red ring of death, secondly by moving it from my cinema room (where it was nice and cool on its rack, to my lounge and sitting it on top of my fairly warm SKY + box, and finally for placing a PS3 on the Xboxs original home - that obviously P*ssed it off good and proper!

So, couple of questions - I've heard some rumours of MS extending warranties to 3 years for this fault - any one confirm this? Secondly, am I going to lose all my save game info? Any idea on timescales for this?

Yes it is extended to three years - provided it is a RROD.

No you will no lose your saved games, you remove the Hard Drive before you return it to MS

Timescales depends on the amount of returns - Mine has taken 2 week, 4 weeks and 3 weeks respectively.

Go Support on Xbox.com to register for a repair, you're correct regarding the extended warranty, registering the repair online saves you speaking to a call centre.

Timescales vary, but expect 2-3 weeks if it's your console and a few days if it's your power adaptor.

If its the PSU then the extended warranty doesn't apply.

Just had my launch day machine returned.
As long as yours has died with the Red Rings of Death MS will fix it for free.
You won't loose your save game info as you only send back the console, so you remove the hard drive.
Mine was back within 2 weeks of UPS collecting it.

ok, strange thing is if I leave it to cool down, it will start up again, then withina few seconds the main GUI will be covered with lots of white translucent squares, freezes and a restart causes RROD. Does this sound familiar?

Yeah, it's ****ed

It's a RROD issue, you will get it repaired under warranty, get it sorted online or through Xbox customer supprt - Its easy to do.

Sorry to hear that.

I don't understand why people don't ditch the damn Xbox360 out of principle. I know Iain 'Victor Meldrew" Young keeps his because of his sizeable investment in games, but I'd be FORCED to sell the lot on eBay and get a PS3 out of sheer frustration. Microsoft are so taking the pi$$ , it's unbelievable.

To be fair I think Iain is the exception rather than the rule. Mine has gone back 3 times - And it's not been too much of a pain.

Because spitting your dummy out then buying a console with no games available and crap online will get you nowhere in the long run

Pete, "THREE TIMES"

1st time, I'd be pi$$ed off, but prepared to overlook it

2nd time, would be the last.

What difference does that make, it's still in a small confined area

well, after the third freeze and rrod yesterday I decided to switch it all off and call MS today.

But, thought before I call up I'd try placing the 360 on a coffee table all by itself, ontop of 4 duplo lego blocks to give it space underneith.

And guess what...been running now for over 2hrs and no freezing or rrod.

So fingers crossed, I'll leave it on today and see what happens. But I suspect it was overheating being placed ontop of the Sky + box.

Neil

It probably wouldnt help, the skyboxes do run hot

Still might be worth getting it fixed while it's under warrenty tho

MS have missed a trick here! They should be issuing FOC Lego bricks and saving themselves a fortune in repairs!

The difference is that MS are supposed to have fixed these hardware issues by now ! Box or no box !

From the article

There's no way of knowing if this particular console was manufactured before or after Microsoft identified the problems with the machines.
Also as i pointed out putting any hardware which runs hot in a small box will cause problems, be it a 360, ps3, pc, skybox etc.

launched in '05 and making the same mistakes in '08

the sad thing is, I'm not even Anti-Microsoft. I'd have an Xbox360 tomorrow if the reliability and noise issues were both sorted - I missed the game Bully, and its coming out soon on that platform. I'm as gutted as anyone this is STILL happening since '05. And I'm incredulous as to people's patience with this fiasco.

I suppose in a way you're right. However no one I know personally thats bought one has had a problem with it. Mine has run faultlessly since day 1 although it is incredibly noisy when the drive spins up.

PS3 would have been in my living room had it not been delayed so long and missed the boat. Also the price at launch was a big reason for me not to buy one. Had they launched at the same time as the Xbox 360 for the price it sells at now Microsoft would have sold hardly and 360's.

I'll probably wait until the PS3 is established games wise and they release the PS3 slimline before I get one.

Maybe they were all out of stock of the new ones due to high demand

Thats a little naive, for an air cooled system to run effeciently it needs air coming in and space for the hot air to be extracted.

Don't forget altho the failure rate is high for hardware there are still approx 12million faultless machines in peoples homes as per Dec 07 sales figures.

Maybe the hardware is risky but MS did a good job selling the whole package/experience

I design air cooled industrial electronics every day for a living. And I manage to not have any of my designs overheat in far more enclosed areas.
