It resets itself at random times (loosing messages stored), it's slow to respond, the camera is so sloooooooooooow I could do a quick sketch of the scene in the time the shutter takes to respond.
I can't load the maps on, despite downloading the Nokia maps software and successfully installing it on the phone, it still wants to connect to my network and download the missing roads..... which when it does connect to my wireless network, it'll only manage to download 60-100Kb then stop. Only exiting the maps program and turning the phone off and on can I stop it 'browsing' the wireless network using up the battery.
Other than that, it's a great phone

Blimey, I don't have any of those things with mine. Had it since July last year, and it's not reset or crashed once, and all of my contacts are fine. The photo/video app, does take a little while to load, but once it's running, it seems quick enough to me. I don't use the maps, but when I gave it a brief try it seemed to work ok. Was a bit slow gettinga gps signal though.
Perhaps there's something a bit dodgy in there somewhere (a fault of some kind)?

Not sure mate. It's not like it gets a lot of abuse either.
Thought maybe it was running on old software but after running the Nokia updater it says it's running the latest firmware.
I blame Orange for their part in the software loaded on it.

Possibly, mines on O2 so woul have different stuff installed. In fact, it didn't really have anything (other than the default N95 apps) installed.

Each phone has a phone code, the phone code tells the up date software which version to give you.
Changed the code to match one of the open ones online and up date. Dunno if it becomes sim free but it removes all the **** that O2, Orange etc install and makes the phone work much better.

Generic flashes can debrand, but some apps require certificate signing which is embedded on your operator flash. Sure you can download the apps again, but be warned some may not work until you get a certificate.
Flashing does not invalidate a Nokia warranty but may invalidate your operators, hence you may get charged to restore it. Some Nokia flashes cannot be down graded. Check Nokia website for more info, as I know of plenty of people who have upgraded their flash only to lose most of the capabilities / apps / certificates.
And sim unlocking is separate from phone flashing, it will not unlock your handset.
Check here for info
And in addition, you can set your date back a year, which does get around the certificate issue, depends on the apps you need.

w00t, successfully debranded my phone and updated the firmware (mine was 11.something.something, so very out of date).
Now maps load fine and I can install other apps too!
happy!

Great thread! Needed to get my WLAN & GPS working so V20 firmware was installing nicely having followed here and the other links. Then it stops and I have now turned my N95 into a brick Even the hard reset 'hold down 3 buttons & power on trick doesnt do a thing)
Be careful out there... (an yes battery was full and it was plugged into the mains )

opps! I'm sorry you had a problem Diesel
One thing with this new firmware, I've run the Nokia-Maps updater but it still needs to download the maps from the net? Oh and it won't navigate for free, it just wants to force me to purchase the voice nagivation and when I don't accept it just takes me back to the map screen without the navigation!?

Yeah! Thanks a bunch Neanderthal!!! I now have a pink slip in place of a phone!!!
I'm now updating my P990 as this half developed unit was sacked in pref to the N95. Maybe this one will work properly now its been in the drawer for 6 months; the latest update is flying in as we speak. Hope this update ends well.

Had my N95 from Launch day and love it. Everything i need in a phone. I've updated it every time the new software became available, and really can;t say i've had any issues with it at all. Battery life could be imporved but i charge it every night anyway or in the car if i'm using gps.
Was using tomtom on it .. but given up waiting for internal GPS Support.
Now using Route66 which utilises the onboard GPS. Not as functional as tomtom, but i only use it when i'm completely lost somewhere.
