Default Wireless network password

My parents have a security enabled wireless network and have just bought another computer to which they want connecting to said network.
Problem is they can't remember or find the piece of paper with the password written on (for safe keeping). Using their existing computer is it possible to find out what the password is?

Nik.

Hi mate...

Can you log into the router...? 192.168.2.1 or something similar...

If you can let us know which router it is someone will be able to help you out.. once logged in to the router you should be able to access it's wireless settings and therefor view/change the encryption and passwords...

cheers

There will be a reset button on the modem that will take it back to factory settings.

The other way to do it is...

from start command goto RUN

type in CMD

type IPCONFIG

you should then see the router ip address... default gateway

goto internet explorer and type in http://DEFAULT GATEWAY ADDRESS e.g 192.168.2.1 then enter

you should then see your routers settings

hope this helps

I thought about that Andy so i had a look at my router. I have a Belkin router and when changing security settings you have to enter the pass key first before any changes can commence, i assume others makes will be similar

I am reluctant to do this as it took an age to get the system running in the first place. I think he has a BT Voyager setup by the way, but not 100% certain.

The last wireless adapter I used showed the password used to connect to the network. It was in network connections, then select properties for the wireless adapter. After that just click through the menus till it pops up.

If Luminous' suggestion doesn't work, then unfortunately as already mentioned by Playsatan. A factory reset is in order. This suggestion is on the understanding you can't access the router's configuration pages.

Before you do a reset, try the following,

Start - settings - control panel - network connections. find your main internet connection. the way to work it out is to right click one, and select disable. Then try to open an internet page, if it opens, thats not the right one. re-enable it and try the next..

When you find the one that works, right click and select properties you should then get a window highlighting how you connect to your network.

in the window will be the follwing (hopefully )

Client for MS windows (box ticked)
File and printer sharing for MS networks (box ticked)
Qos packet schedules (box ticked)
Internet protocol (Tcp/ip) box ticked

select Internet protocol (Tcp/ip) and the properties box should light up
if it does click on it.

you should see another set of pages with the following tabs

General / alternate settings.

The general tab is the one you want.

Look which comments are active:

you have

Obtain ip address automatically
Use the following ip address

Obtain DNS server automatically
Use the following DNS server addresses

make sure the automatically options are selected.

I was unable to find my router via Ethernet, but could find it wirelessly from the lappy.

once i changed these boxes back, i could access the router via Ethernet

because i specified alternate address's higher than the router as my network start address, i effectively hid the router from the system.

its worth checking

Good guide mart

Nik52, to clear things up. Do you have the username and password to access the routers configuration pages? I think I've misread this thread as I'm under the impression you don't have either password for the router and wireless key.

As long as the password for the router has not been changed you can normally look it up on the web Thats another way in to change the key.
