Opening ports for torrent client?
My current torrent client is saying that my port forwarding may not be configured correctly.
Can anyone explain how I open the correct ports for Torrent.
I am running a standard NTL modem and Netgear wireless router for the wii and lappy.

I also run NTL, well Virgin now.
I thought the shiny box with flashing lights was the router but alas it seems to only be the modem. Ambit 08004EU.
How on earth am I supposed to work out what router I run to open up the ports please?

A computer that is directly connected to the internet needs extra care to ensure its secure. A router provides a basic NAT firewall to protect your machines.

1) Make sure the PC has a static internal IP address.
2) Work out what ports you need to open
3) Open up the router, and forward both TCP and UDP for all the ports you need to your static internal IP address.
4) For some torrent software you have to specify your WAN IP address (this is the address that is specified by your ISP, you cannot change this). For some people (dynamic IP) this address is different each and every time your router is rebooted. You can find this address by going to WhatIsMyIP.com each time you need it (its also available from your router)
(you may not need both TCP and UDP, but if you don't really know just use both to make it work)

If you have a modem, then you have no router. The ports you need to open are the ports on the first device the receives your broadband connection. In your case that will be your PC's firewall (you are using a firewall I hope).

I had this problem (not knowing anything about port forwarding) and a friend suggested using Bitcomet as a torrent downloader. Did so and it seems to sort it all out itself somehow??

Before starting a new thread, I thought I would search, and found this one .
None of the above means much to me ..... In fact, it is a bit Greek
I have been instructed that i need to open port 33905, I know what my IP is ........ How do I open the port ?
Above you say open the router .... I have Blueyonder Broadband through their supplied box going to my Belkin mimo wireless router, I can access internet through it with both laptops, my N95 and PSP (after entering my WEP) .
So how do you 'open a port' ?
Much thanks in advance.
Nate.
