Question Why does my computeer keep freezing?

Very odd. It freezes for short periods of time, so that the mouse, and any other control, does nothing, then suddenly "catches up" with what the mouse etc told it to do a few seconds before. Most disconcerting.

It's also taken to freezing for longer periods.

Pressing Ctrl, Alt, Del shows that something called iexplore.exe is using up to 98, or 99% of the cpu at those times. At other times, System Idle is using 98%. Is THAT normal?

What does this mean, and how can I stop it occurring?

TIA, Alcazar

I've found recently that when filling in text boxes within IE7 that everythign freezes as well for 5 seconds or so, then suddenly catches up. I've not been able to track down the reason yet.

btw - iexpore.exe is Internet Explorer.

I thought it probably was, but why the hell should any programme use up to 98% of the CPU?

And WHY is it STILL using it, even after I've shut internet explorer down?

Stupid computers...............

1. switch to Mozilla Firefox, a superior browser and see if the problem persists - internet explorer is the route of all evil and was spawned by the devil himself. FYI he also created Windows ME.

Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client

2. Get yourself a decent anti-spyware program and also a good anti-virus program and run the checks.

3. Also download CCLEANER from filehippo.com and check whats going on at Statup - some nasty program may be being loaded.

Done the Firefox thing, and am using that now, it's the default setting.

How does one go about checking what's happening at startup?

Alcazar............btw: thanks for that so far.

OK, done all that. There were about 30 applications starting up, now there are about 6!!

And the whole system starts, loads and will access the internet in around two minutes, where before it was taking over five.

Thanks for that.

I'm not sure if I like the font I seem to have got with Firefox though. It's supposed to be Verdana, but is a bit skinny and square shaped.

Firefox won't affect any fonts. Is it doing this on a particular web page ?

Yes, on here. It seems somehow "paler" than before too
