Default remote desktop - getting the target PC to shutdown or restart

When connecting via remote desktop to a windows computer, I don't seem to have the option to SHUTDOWN or RESTART the machine.

I can log in as administrator, but the usual menu options aren't there. They're not even available on the task manager.

Is there something I can tweak to do this ?

Hello

You just use the command line and type:

Shutdown -s (which shutsdown)
Shutdown -r (which restarts)

Yes, I know the computer name, but no, it doesn't have the same local admin password as mine. I'm logged in via remote VPN to the PC's administrator account.

thanks both of you for the command prompt - good to know

ah bum!

i was known as the "BT DOS assassin" for a while, remote shutdowns are comical when the user is in the middle of a shareholders presentation

Just to be clear, all you have to do is open the commend prompt on the computer you are connected to and type the shutdown command, or simply put the command as an icon on the desktop.

For some reason people don't find it funny when you're remote accessing the server and instead of quitting your session accidentally shutting the server down instead

heh! yeah, I'm always careful not to accidentally shut someone down - this particular machine is still being configured prior to hand-over. I'm sure "shut-down" was available on the menus - was it killed off in a recent remote desktop update ?

does anyone use OpenOffice ? Is it completely free, even in a business environment ? I ask, as all this user needs is the ability to read some excel spreadsheets on the server

The option in the menu is "Windows Security" or "Security Options"
Shutdown and logoff commands are in there if enabled.
