1. "ntl" - is it safe to assume your internet comes into the house via a cable socket ? (eg. NOT a BT telephone socket)

2. How far away is the 2nd computer , and does it get moved around the house at all (eg. a laptop) ?

Hes asking as hes trying to work out if you want wireless or not.

If its close your best bet is to buy a cable router, lob a RJ45 cable in each PC and into router, router into modem and jobs done !

A switch would mean only one PC would work at a time !

based on your answers this is what you need:
Netgear RP614 DSL Broadband Router + 4 port 10/100 Switch. Platinum Range. : ngr-745144

if you fancy having wireless technology as well, get this instead
Netgear Rangemax MIMO 802.11g Wireless Router : ngr-wpn824

Remember to buy a CAT5(e) network cable for each PC - they'll need it to plug into the above
