I've found IE7 to be faster, less memory intensive, and more stable than IE6 on both XP and Vista (32bit and 64bit). Found it more stable than firefox as well, which seems to crash rather a lot...

I fully agree with Iain....until the bit about Firefox.
It's been very stable for me for 99% of the time. Much better than any IE in terms of stability and speed. I used to use IE occasionally for some websites that didnt work in Firefox - but that's a thing of the past now for me.
Only use IE for the bloody BBC PLayer !

IE7 has been built and optimised for Vista. It was built specifically for that OS hence why some of the features of it, phishing tools, tabbed browsing, interface, menus, security settings etc are so different to IE6 and more familiar to vista users. However from experience, it is bloaty, annoying and cumbersome in use on XP. Whilst IE6 is not exactly brilliant, it certainly works better on XP.

It's almost exactly the same to use on XP as it is on Vista. What "cumbersome" features are you referring to? I've got IE7 installed on all of my XP machines now, and without exception it runs better than IE6 and Firefox on all of them

I think what Swiss means is that the whole visual style to IE7 makes more sense in Vista, much the same as WMP11.
Obviously the functionality is pretty much identical on XP an vista.

I never said it was a contest. It's a simple fact that the functionality of the browser is identical on XP and Vista. It just looks a little prettier on Vista. To claim anything otherwise is just wrong, and giving misinformation to the OP

Ok Iain, since you wont let this drop, let me explain again what I meant.
I have upgraded literally hundreds of PC's running XP to IE7, through rollouts in corporate environments, friends, family, collegues etc.
And I cant remember exactly the figures, but I would say around 65% of those upgrades have resulted in an increase in support calls and disgruntled customers wanting to rollback.
Now call me naive , but that figure dosent give me confidence in a browser which was designed for VISTA, but only rolled out into XP in an effort to stem the amount of problems encountered in IE6 and also to play catch up with some of the features in Firefox.
Yes it may be prettier in Vista, but as I said in my first post, in my opinion, it dosent bring anything worthwhile to the OS for the OP.

Fair enough. I'm only running it on about 12 XP machines at work, and it is definitely a lot more stable, less resource hungry etc than IE6 on all of them. Also running it on my 3 Vista machines and 3 XP boxes at home (plus friends / relations machines etc), and seen the same there.
Out of interest, what sort of support calls are you getting? Genuine problems, or just people who don't like using a new piece of software (because it looks slightly different).

well you must be the lucky one
support calls range from
"i hate this piece of fecking crap", to " its slowed down my PC" to "i cant go onto a website without that friggin phishing filter annoying me" etc etc
that is obviously people who dont liek change, but the overall consensus is that it just dosent work as well in XP as it does in vista (well amongst my clients at least)
Vista is such a mamoth support task right now, that we anticipate support calls to drop off about IE7 on XP and esculate into " I hate Vista " very soon

We've had issues with IE7 as its suprisingly not compatible with a number of 3rd party software like Siebel, thats where most of the calls will be from. When they changed the way IE7 was distributed over windows updates recently, it bypassed our wsus and automatically installed on people pc's causing programs to stop. Manually uninstalling 7 sorted the problem.
Im using IE7 on a xp and vista machine with no difference, its more like 'visually designed' for vista with the round menu icons, as is most other software now but workwise its identical to xp
