Default Help - External harddrive problems ?

Hey there Im lookin for a little help with my external harddrive. Ive a 500gb Maxtor external harddrive which has taken a little bump while it was powered on. When I power it up now it makes a buzzing noise and can no longer be seen under my computer, but can still be detected under device managers universal serial bus controller. When I look in the propertires part of the usb external storage detected it displays a code 10 error?
I'm wondering if the heads have crashed against the platters and caused damage? My question is, can the disk be fixed or can any of my data be retrieved, and if so where can this be done? Any info is appriciated

Cheers

Try this as well:
Check the jumpers on the drive and make sure they're set correctly.

Try installing the drive as an IDE slave to see if the computer recognizes the
drive by itself and that it's healthy. You can temporarily substitute it for the
CD-ROM. Again, match the HD's jumper settings to match the CD-ROM's.

If the drive checks out OK, the hard drive enclosure is probably bad

Yeah I tried it on a few pc's and using known good cables. Looks like the interface to the disk's ok so the usb controller can see it, but the drive itself is knackered. Managed to recover the data from my other drive, which had most of the data on it at some point but was deleted or removed when transferred to the 500GB disk. I used a file rescue program which resurrected the deleted data from lower layers on the smaller drive and took the knackered 500GB disk back to pc world and got a replacement. Jobs a good un. Cheers for the pointers tho. Just need to make sure I don’t drop this one.
