NET TIME /SETSNTP:
Having a real problem trying to get our Win2k server to SYNC with an external time source. Its a dc and was previously just keeping time itself, but its started to lose time frequently.
NET TIME /SETSNTP:ntp0.zen.co.uk (thanks kieran)
the command completed successfully
everything seemed fine, so I thought i'd check if it was working, so I stopped the time service and set the time 10 mins ahead of the proper time
I then did
w32tm -once
In the report I noticed it wasn't getting a useable datagram back from the external time source. Can you tell me why ? Also, I'm a little concerned with the line AvoidTimeSyncOnWan = 0 which according the knowledgebase means the site of the time source is ignored ? If it was = 1 The computer will NOT sync with a time source in a different site ?? Which one do I use ?!?!
Here's the results of the w32tm -once

I've read Port 123 (UDP) needs to be open. How can I check this ?
We have a SonicWall - could it be, its blocking the port, or is it something else ?

It'd almost certainly the Firewall blocking inbound NTP traffic. We (read I) set up a specific rule on the corporate firewall to allow the NTP traffic into the network
Oh, and I allow 123 TCP and UDP through

Amazing - I've just VPN'd into the server and created a rule which allows NTP traffic through in both directions. Just checked if my rule made any difference and BINGO! It worked.
I log onto Scoobynet and there's your answer, inline with mine! Thanks Kieran - you're a star.
I've allowed NTP traffic through in BOTH directions and its working with those settings.
I haven't made any allowance for TCP and UDP on 123 - should I ?

I guess if it works the answer is no
I just did so as the protocols are pre-defined Checkpoint so I figured... what the hey
Happy to see you've got time services working - if you're running AD this kind of stuff is essential.
