Are the brand new 360's more reliable?

Nope.
There has been an extra heatsink added - But since they have been incorporated on 360's going to repeair since July, and people have still been getting RROD's on Xboxes returned after that date, suggests that the "fix" doesn't work.
Basically, the 360 is fundamentally flawed as a design and I think you will see people continue to have problems until the new 60nm chips arrive.
I hope all of the above is completely wrong, because my 360 has already gone back 3 times, and I don't want it happening again. But I have about as much faith of that as I do QPR getting into the premiership this season.

Being a stingy ******* my central heating is always set low, never above 20 degrees, maybe there's a link? What temp do others have their house?

I've been wondering about this too, mine is in the front room under the front window next to a radiator that is switched off and sitting on the bottom shelf of a coffee table so no sides to where it sits keeping any heat around it. Its never overheated but longest its been on is maybe 3 or 4 hours playing Forza 2.

The ambient temperature shouldn't be enough to cause a problem. You will find almost all electornic products for use in the home/industrial environments are designed with an ambient temp of 40 degrees C in mind. Under normal circumstances, the ambient temp around your xbox will be nothing like this.
My 360 is sitting on its own, in a well ventilated area, with good air movement. My sons is squeezed into a shelf, next to a PS2 and a Cube.
Guess which one has never gone wrong.....
Yes, that's right, the one that has been squeezed into a shelf with no breathing room whatsoever.
