Webcam and Wifi? Making a video baby monitor
Hi - I'm trying to see how easy it would be to make a video baby monitor using a webcam and a laptop.
I have a laptop which has no wi-fi capability, that's all. Presumably I would need a webcam and a power supply for it. How do I get the two devices to talk to each other? Can I add 802.11 capability to the laptop via a PCMCIA card or USB socket? And how would the webcam transmit?
Many thanks for any help?
Dave

There is a good (although a little out of date) article here:
Monitor your home with a Wi-Fi Webcam, Weekend Project, Digital Living at CNET.co.uk
Wireless webcams are pretty cheap now.
Yes, you can use a wireless USB adapter/PCMCIA card for your laptop.
You could potentially bypass the need for a wireless router and set the two up ad-hoc.

daft question, but why?
you only need to hear it if it starts crying, surely?
we had one of those breathing monitor things - absolute pants and a sure-fire way to wake you and your partner up in the middle of the night when you forget to disable it after picking baby up.
BT digital one is brilliant - and the lullabys it plays normally od the trick to shut the little blighters up
