Broom5,

The modem should be operating at 512 kb/sec (bits) that should work out to around 64 KB/sec (bytes) download. Upload is 128 kb/sec or 16 KB/sec.

Windows download box is very in-accurate, so really you should use a benchmark software to measure. HTML could / will be cached, so might appear faster than it actually is.

A accurate measure of speed is FTP downloading.

Thumbs up

Oh,

And download a fire wall like zonealarm. www.zonealarm.com You shouldn't connect to the internet without it. Dialup / ADSL or CM, it's such a security risk....

No software is really going to give a clear indication - especially as a lot of it is based abroad. NTL's 512k limit is only within their network as they have no control outside of that.

You should be able to download at around 40k from most places but sometimes I get a constant 70k. Uploads usually top out around 10-12k but once that happens you cant do anything else download wise.

Hi All

A good site for bandwidth testing http://www.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/

The reason some persons enjoy greater capacity than others is based on the contention rate used by the ISP - i.e. how many people are sharing a frequency.

I have just moved into a new estate and must be the only one with a cable modem - the capacity is incredible

Hope this helps and i have not bored you all too much !!
