Default XP - how memory is enuf?

bunch of developer said they need more memory. they said websphere, visual studio, .NET stuff, smartclient stuff, etc, etc need at least 4GB.

the PC they are getting are HP Workstation xw4400 (CORE 2 Duo and with 2GB memory running Windows XP SP2).

so, it is a bit OTT to have 4GB?

Well it certainly wont use any more than 4Gb unless its 64 bit edition, same with Servers too

These days it isnt really OTT to get 4Gb, I have 1.5Gb in my Dell D610 Laptop, and I have 1Gb in my Pentium 4 studio PC, but I realistically need 4Gb in that one, especially if I want to use Samples

Websphere is a complete memory hog -- so the more memory you can throw at it the better. Although as above, you will only get 3.3gb (something like that) with 4gb of memory installed and you cannot go higher than that.

I am a contract DBA, they gave me a sad **** Dell Laptop with XP and 512 mb, they got me some more memory after I pointed out I spent half my time waiting for the computer, they upgraded it to 1.25 gb and its a lot better and I plugged in a second monitor that helped, memory is cheap but qualified people are not, give them what they want and sack them if they stilldont produce, but dont loose productivity for a few quids worth of ram.

better to run WS in a server environment (*nix) and let the dev's have their own containers.

XP 32-bit won't address more than 3.2MB, so anymore is a waste of money.

i have 4gigs in my work core2duo laptop.

it shows 3.3gb available - the rest is allocated to the os. i think with enough ram, it loads the os into memory too

You really don't need that much memory for VS / .NET stuff (2gb is plenty), but websphere is a memory hog and will basically eat anything you throw at it.

I'm using vs2005/.net quite happily on my 2gb core2duo laptop...
