I'm not very computer literate but I recently set up my PC running UBUNTU and I have to say I am mega-impressed. For the web and downloading torrents it is absolutely fantastic.

The downside is it is a little bit slow, but I think that is my PC.

Why oh why do people bother wasting time and money lining the pockets of Microsoft when this is available for free???

I seriously can't understand why more businesses don't use LINUX surely the money wasted on Microsoft could be diverted into more productive efforts.

I truly believe that the evolution of LINUX into such a user-friendly operating system is a major cloud on the horizon of Microsoft.....

I suppose Microsoft have got some fancy reason why you shouldn't use this really cool operating system...

I tried Ubuntu Studio but sadly couldnt get it to fully install in a vmware session, so sort of gave up for now, it kept failing on setting up the boot partition

Not really had time to spend on it tbh, I will do one day

Goldman, did you have too much coffee this morning? lol

Run this MS live labs demo and tell me they're not smart cookies
Microsoft Live Labs: Photosynth

I'm not getting into the MS vs Linux, but MS have played a big part getting personal computing into the home for the whole family.

i like linux, but only coz i'm a geek/nerd/dev coder.

Last time I tried to set up a dual boot I had issues that linux didn't have the right drivers for many of my hardware components, most notably the video card.

I use linux almost exclusively now, and it works absolutely brilliantly. Ubuntu in particular is really easy to set up, and it works absolutely brilliantly imo

I'd go as far as saying that it's ready for desktop use, as you don't have to mess around with scary config files etc etc if you don't want to.

If you primarily use your computer for browsing, email and word editing etc, then IMO there's no good reason for not using Ubuntu

Also try Simply Mepis 6.5 and also PC linux 2007 these to are great distro's.You can get awesome 3 D effects on the desktop with these too.

I have been running Mepis for nearly 4 months now,no problems.Very rarely touch my XP partition anymore.Dual booting should be no problem,i have never had issues.

Tried it yesterday and took it back off. Yes it was (reasonably) easy to install, but involved mucking about with command lines to get wireless and widescreen resolution working. Font scaling/smoothing was a big gripe, looked horridly jagged, esp. in FF. It ran a bit slow. Generally though if you just want to do standard stuff, didn't seem too bad. It has a long way to catch up on in terms of extra features though.
