Default What spec PC are people running Vista on?

Think its about time I buy a kosher copy of an OS. Prob go for Vista Home Premium at around £70 OEM.

Question is how well it will run on my aging PC do you think. Ive checked up the upgrade advisor and all ok. The main issue is RAM and I have 2gb so should be ok. Here is my spec:

AMD 64bit 3200
Asus A8N-SLI
2gb PC3200 RAM
74gb Raptor 16mb (OS and Primary Games)
160GB Caviar SE for pics, mp3's
XFX 7800GT 256mb

Also does anyone have problems running Counterstrike Source under Vista as I play that quite a bit?

Cheers,
Simon

running Vista Enterprise on

Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
Radeon X800 256MB RAM
Segate Barracuda Hard drive
Creative X-FI sound card
19" TFT

Runs very well on my system however Creative havent fully sorted the sound card drivers under vista for my card. Haven't as yet tried games with it though. Those points aside it running great, seems to run better than XP on the same system to be honest. Im dual booting at the mo and Vista seems to run quicker

Your spec looks okay, I have a dual-core 3.4 Pentium with 4gb RAM (but with a rubbishy graphics card!) and it runs well.

The compatibility is more interesting, with several things refusing to run. I have XP running in a Virtual Machine in order to run some of the software I need.

Core 2 duo - was 2.4GHz, but now running a small overclock
MSI P965 Platinum motherboard
2GB RAM - PC3200 I think
Sapphire X1950 graphics card

Haven't really thrown any state of the art games at it, but performace-wise, I'm more than happy with it.

Mine runs faster than xp even with all the fancy effects, i kinda think that yes programming has improved so it runs faster, but as pointed out, compatibility issues are you main concern

Your spec is fine, my box is very similar

Gbyte K8Npro
Amd 64 3400+
2gig crucial
7800GS

Vista Ultimate n Enterprise are very slick n quicker than in XP. Gaming might be an issue with some titles as a fair bit of resources is used by the aero interface and Vista uses the RAM in a different manner to XP. Having said that I can play RBurns Rally n GTR2 maxxed out. Both are fairly intensive games.

I ran VISTA Ultimate RC1 on:

AMD XP2400+
1 GB RAM
FX5900XT 128MB Ultimate

No probs, Aero worked - graphics benchmarking was ~ 1/2 results for XP but there were only Beta drivers then.

Used it quite a bit & seemed fine - would have paid up to ~ £20 upgrade from XP Pro - but not worth any more than that to me - So haven't got it on either of my machines since it expired in June

Got a windows Aero look Theme from MS (I think) called Zune - that's quite nice

Lol if it runs on that I should be fine I think. Time to start a thread about the cheapest place to get a copy.

What does Ultimate offer over Premium other than the full PC Backup and Encryption options? Doesnt really justify twice the price of Premium for me unless Im missing something.

Doh! Slip of the finger

As for getting a copy of Vista. Ah, well, getting the software, that's the easy bit, getting a valid key, now that's the challenge. My g/f happened to win me a copy of ultimate at some vendor conference she was at last month.

Put it this way, my Laptop runs vista Business 32bit is a:

Core 2 DuoT5500 1.66gig
1gig of 533MHz Ram
60gig HD
intel GMA 950 gfx.

RAM is bare minimum IMO (even with this alledged speedbooster thing). It works ok, but once a few application are running, it quickly runs out.

Graphics also struggle, Aero and glass desktop works ok, but aero won't work on dual monitors.

Processor spends most of its time idling and underclocked (intel speed stepping).

Although I'm annoyed that Toshiba supplied a 64bit capeable machine installed with a 32bit OS when there is a 64bit alternative at no extra cost

I run Vista home edition and play CS:S quite a bit. I have an odd problem where it drops my wieless connectione very so often but don't think that's got anything to do with vista. It runs CS fine other than that.

Dropping the wireless connection will more than likely be Vista

I have done quite a lot of testing with Vista Wireless and well tbh it is complete pants

The main fix is to use the XP drivers (this is on intel based wireless cards) and NOT the Vista ones

The XP drivers are far more stable and work as intended than the Vista ones

What you don't want to do is try and run Vista Business on a Lenovo lappy with 512MB RAM like one of my customers did. Serves him right for buying from a competitor
Suffice to say it was as slow as ****

Default Vista

The main things with Vista is Processor, Ram, and Grapics Card. I had a Athlon 4200+, 2Gb ram and ATI X850Xt and it ran fine although slower than XP. I have installed it on a lot less and it has ran fine. Although under any load it quickly slows down. Since I have ugraded to Athon 6000+ X2, 2Gb DDR OCZ Ram and Nvidia 8800GTS Superclocked and it just flies at everything I Throw at it.
Best places to buy Vista are scan.com and Ebuyer - Cheap Computers Laptops Digital Cameras Televisions.
If you buy some Hardware you can get the OEM version. Which is the same as full version without the box etc.
