Default Mac's can't keep a bluetooth connection open

My G4 powerbook cant keep amy bluetooth connection open.

I can find and connect any of my bluetooth devices (headset / phone etc) but the connection won't last for any longer than about 20 seconds before the lappy kills the connection.

Anyone come accross thos before?

I'm running OS X 10.4.10

Looks like the BT logic board has failed! Just done a clean install of Tiger and its still not working.

Chuffing great! More expense as this is teh reason I hate macs, you can't buy spare bits from them to install yourself.

Stick a Belkin BT dongle in a USB port. That's what I use in a G3 PB without problems. 10 quid at PCW.

got 1 for the PC, just a bit of a bugger to have to keep swapping it over. Its what was lovely about the G4, it was all built in.

Boot the machine from the Apple Hardware Test CD/DVD and run a full test and see what it comes up with. Sounds as though the BT components in the machine might have died, hence why it won't work.

This gets wierder and wierder.

Rebuilt the OS off a clean install and now the mobile can connect and stay connected but the headsets cant. yes I have tried it with 3 different headsets.

Whats the betting my G4 only has a 1.1 BT unit, so can't support headsets (had the same problem on the pc so ended up having to buy a BT ver 2 to do VOIP)

Markus, whats this Apple hardware test CD?DVD you speak of? I don't have 1.

And whats the option key? Is it the apple key ot ALT? (minds a bit shot at teh mo)

Borrowed a mates disk, got it and held down the alt key. Worked a treat.

Oh and everything passed tthe test.

I'm putting money on the fact teh BT unit in my G4 is ver 1.1, either that or Tiger doesn't support what I am tryign to do (hook headset up to use for VOIP)

Have read that EDR 2 (IIRC what its called) is being supported under Leopard. thats what I have to use on the pc to get Voip working so I'm stuck till then.

But mobile now works with iSync, hence the above conclusion.

What's the exact spec of the powerbook? Just had a read of this, which does seem to concur with your thought of it only supporting BT 1.1. I think the first laptops to support BT 2 would probable be the Intel based ones, as there wasn't a G5 laptop.

Actually, having said that, have a look at this list which details the powerbook models that have BT and what version of BT they come with.

Good question Markus, and I can't tell you.

I know its a 1.5ghz 15" G4 Powerbook. So that narrows the choice down to 2, but it doesn't tell you which power plug they had (I know teh ater G4'shad the magnetic plug where mine has the round phono type.

By magnetic plug I'm guessing you mean the magsafe connector, and I'm pretty sure that was never offered on the G4 laptops and was a new feature for the Macbooks.

I do indeed mean that.

I'll have to cross ref the numbers tonight to find out if I have BT 1.1 or 2 using the links earlier.

Well I'm mystified now!

the box has sweden printed on it!! So can't figure out if the comp was originally sold in sweden and its found its way over here (was a referb).

Add to that my model number off the box is M9676B/A. Working on that princibl for the model numbers on Markus's link, I'm tempted to say I do have BT ver 2, but EDR isn't being supported until Leopard.
