Default Anti Virus software recommendations please

We've been with McAfee for some years now but a computer geeky type (Hi Chris ) told me there are better options out there. So what do you lot recommend?

I don't mind paying an annual subscription, I think I currently pay about £35 a year for McAfee.

Cheers

Sal

NOD32, if you look over on Overclockers UK Forums - powered by vBulletin you'll see it is highly rated. You can download a 30 day trial and see how you get on with it.

for those considering using AVG, please take the time to read the below.

It's the e-mail trail between myself (a paying customer of AVG) and AVG's support:

(appologies for the bad formatting)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

The file you have sent us is detected by the new update of AVG as
Backdoor.Breplibot.V. Please follow the procedure on how to remove a
trojan virus.

Trojan horse should be deleted. There is nothing to heal (there is
only a virus code in the file) and there is no need to back it up into the Virus Vault.

Please do the following:
- Start the program AVG 7.1
- Run the Complete Test for all local hard drives - Menu Tests -
Test manager
- Complete test - Start test
- In case of virus infection select the button Heal/Remove. If the
Trojan horse is marked as embedded object, please move archive that contains this
virus to the Virus Vault.
- Some infected files cannot be healed/removed directly. In some
cases following message will be displayed: "To finish the healing,
it is necessary to restart the computer" or "File deletion was scheduled to the next
restart of the computer".
- After finishing the Complete test please restart your PC and
repeat the AVG Complete test again to check all local hard drives again (to be sure
all infected files have been removed).
- If you find any infected files again, please restart your computer
to the Safe mode. To do it press and hold the F8 key during the initial Windows boot phase.
Repeat all steps described above in Safe mode.

How to start PC in the safe mode:
How to Start a Windows 98-Based Computer in Safe Mode

If you can't get rid of Trojan horse this way, please, send me the
full name and exact path to the infected file. The easiest way to do
that is to do the
following:

Run AVG program (basic or advanced interface) and choose Test
Results from Results menu (you can also use F6 key to get the same).
Now you can see the list of finished tests, double click the latest
one (by date) and you will get the full list of detected viruses (if there were any), including the
path, the name and status of infected object. When it is opened, go back to
main AVG program screen - Program menu - Export... item (or you
can user Ctrl+S shortcut to get Save as... option). Please send us
this created file for further analysis.

Other common problem is that Trojan horse keeps comming back to the
PC. This is mostly caused by some adware/spyware application. This kind of
applications may cause many unwanted changes in your system and some of them can
download viruses or Trojan horses from the internet to your PC.

It is recommended to scan your PC using some specialized
anti-spyware/adware tools, such as Ad-Aware from Lavasoft (http://www.lavasoft.de).

Thank you for your cooperation.

Best regards,

Daniel Rott

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

Then I recommend to update your Avg to latest virus base as this
virus was added to new update released lately...

You need to have virus base as: 267.14.25 / 247

Thank you.

I think you misunderstood what I said when I said the user had run the file.

They have EXTRACTED the .SCR from the .zip and have executed the SCR.

AVG did not pickup:
1. the extraction
2. the execution

I have since run a full scan on the PC and it has detected nothing -
even though the SCR & the ZIP are sitting on the desktop.

Please advise

Regards

Jason

You will see that I am on the version specified.

AVG does not detect this file.

I have updated (just in case I was on the wrong version) and I can
still move, copy & run the SCR.

Please ring me on 01494 769222 and ask for.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

We really apologize for misunderstanding. This file is really detected
with the latest virus base which is AVI 267.15.0/ 248. This update was
released about the 1 hour ago.

When we received the email from you, we already had a sample of this
virus and we were working on releasing of the new update. This is the
reason why we wrote to you that the virus is detected by the new virus
update. Unfortunately, we did not add the information, that the update
will be released soon. So it seemed that the update file had been already available.

We apologize for any inconvenience and misleading information that we provided.

Thanks for understanding and sending a sample.

If you still have problems with removing of this virus, please contact
us for further information. Please also attach the latest Test Result
for further analysis.

Thank you.

You mean the one that was JUST released? (within the last 20 minutes?)

Why could you not just say (like in my other e-mails to you) that you
did not detect it & were updating accordingly.

It's a very bad and misleading approach you took. Completely unprofessional.

Please can you pass this support log onto one of your supervisors for
an explanation.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thanks for the correct information this time.

If I had that information at the time I would have pulled the machine
from the network so no further damage could be done.

As it is now I have to do a full network scan to see if out network has
been penetrated by an intruder & to see what other damage has been caused.

Where should I send the invoice for my time?

Geeky? Surely not referring to me Sal?

AVG and the like are pretty good, but they can be get hungry on resources. I've been using Avira recently, which has a much smaller system footprint than many AV software programs. It's also very highly rated in the industry. Free for personal use version is available.

Kaspersky is a very good alternative - it's one of only a couple of commercial AV systems that we are happy to offer on our secure applicances that we sell.

Even more reason to use NOD32. I found as others have mentioned that AVG (free or pro) missed threats. When I tried Avast it provided good detection but was heavy on system resources. Since using NOD32 I have had no problems, it justs sits there in the background and does it's job.
