Lightbulb Vista/Norton stopping my downloads - I think :(

Old hand to PC's, but a newbie to Vista.

I'm trying to get the PC I've built loaded with up-to-date drivers, software etc... The PC's is running Vista ultimate and Norton (NIS ver 10.2.0.30).

When I visit any WWW (like asus, skype, nvidia), click on a link to download something, get the prompt "do you want to Run, Save, Cancel". Click Save, point it to where I want to save it. Wait. Then when the download has finished, off I trot to find it and .... nada, niente, zilch . In short, no downloaded file. Very odd.

Anyone got any ideas? 'Cos I'm stumped. Is there some weird and wonderful feature Mr Gates has imposed on me, that I don't know about?

Cheers.

Nope whatever it is, it's not a Windows feature...

You're sure you are looking in the right place? The default download location in Vista is C:\users\yourname\Downloads

Not necessarily djuk.

Might be Vista's UAC stopping you from saving a file to a specific directory maybe? Turn off UAC in control panel/user accounts/user account control on/off temporarily to rule it out.

To be honest I would stay well clear of any norton products.

I did think that but there would be some notification or error denying permission...

Nope, before I turned it off, it wouldn't even save files from notepad. You'd issue the command to save, but there was no error/denied message at all. Might be different for dloads, nvr tried it, UAC stays off permanently, complete nuisance otherwise

I had over 1 years subscription left on Norton, hence why I am using it (read, tight git!). Will change eventually.

I normally partition my pcs (c drive = os, w drive = work, g= games, d=demos/downloads). You get the idea.

Tried to download to D drive. No luck. Then I noticed this "download" folder that Vista created under my user. So I tried there. No luck.

I am not on my Vista machine at the moment, but will try all of your ideas (from above), when I am next using it.

Many thanks.

Have a nice weekend to you all.

Mark.

Again as said above I could only thinks its the windows permissions, stopping it from saving, when windows downloads it does so to a temp folder and then copies over, make a note of the file name and search for it ??

This is what happens when you try to download to a folder in vista where you don't have the appropriate permissions..

Remove Vista and install Windows XP Pro, works great for me

Norton is a bag of... as well, its resource hungry and as proven on many forums, a trojan writers dream. I recommend something like Sygate Firewall or the McAfee suite of apps.

Tried all of the above. Still had the problem.

So, I did a uninstall of all Norton related apps. Problem solved.

Now, a new problem, to read all the reviews on other protection software and find something better to use...

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.
