Default Speeding up USB drive access?

I'm using a 2gb lexar USB drive (USB 2) on my new Dell laptop but copying and deleting files from the drive takes ages (deleting a mass of files on the USB drive takes about a second per file and copying lots of small files, >30k each, takes an age too).

Any suggestions on speeding things up?

Cheers
Richard.

Ah - that might be it - I'm running AVG free edition. I'll have a check. Cheers.

I find its quicker to do smaller files, one by one, rather than bulk them all up.

Have you tried different USB ports? I've heard that on some machines , the ports are at different speeds.

But it could also be a larger capacity drive running at a slower speed.....

Hope this helps

Dan

It would say when you plug it in "This device can perform faster" if you plugged it into a USB 1.1 port. So if you got that message, then you only have the older USB ports (1.1) so thats why its slower.

Both are USB 2 (drive and laptop). I'll time some transfers to see what speed large file transfers are giving me.

Thanks for all the above advice.

If you're happy you have it in a USB2 port, and its a USB2 drive, then its down to the read/write speeds of the drive itself. some are quick, some aren't
