A quickie (but urgent) about ethernet switches...
Hi all,
I've bought my youngest a computer for her birthday, and I want to network it (well, install all the networking stuff prior to her birthday, so it can then be plug and play)
Problem is that I've run out of ports on my router.
At the moment, it works like this -
port 1 - PC
port 2 - Xbox 360
port 3 - studio G5
port 4 - Airport Extreme (wireless bridge)
My idea was to connect a switch such as THIS
(8-Port 10Mbps Network LAN Ethernet Hub / Switch)
to port 1, connect the PC back in, and run CAT5 cable to the "new" computer.
I realise that the speed wont be as good, as you're in essence "halving" the port, but it's only for 2 pcs that use a bit of locked-down internet.
I don't want to go down the wireless route, as I want to eventually store all their media on a networked media drive. Plus wireless is great for my MacBook Pro and PDA, but don't want it on the static computers
Have I got this right?
If so, I need to order pdq
Thanks in advance,
Dan

better to buy a fast ethernet switch like this
Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | NETGEAR FS108 8 Port 10/100 Desktop Switch
it does cost a little more but worth it IMO
connect all the machines to the new switch to have a 100 meg backbone between each machine, should link up with patch cable as the switch supports auto-uplink

OK then
So, I plug Port 1, for example out of my 4-port ADSL/modem router into the input of the FS108, then connect everything back out of that...
right?
