video on pc problems
after my last build of my pc, and new install of XP, i have not been able to run ANY video programs (quicktime, vlc, mediaplayer, realplayer etc) with or without codecs.
Before the build, i had optimised the machine so that i could play pretty much everything, but now when i try to run even mediaplayer, it takes 100% resources and locks up the pc for ages.
Last night i retried vlc, and it does similar things, though i can get sound.
I have downloaded the latest graphics drivers, and removed all codecs and video programs and still i cant get mediaplayer or vlc to work.
I cannot even get simple video to work, in any format (avi, wmv, mov, mpeg etc) even stuff i know works on standard codecs.
Are there any known issues with my hardware or software set ups? Or is a resinstall of XP the easiest solution?
PC is as follows:
win xp home sp 2
Asus k8n MBoard
AMD Sempron 2800
Nvidia geforce 6600 gt (latest driver)
1 Gb ram

I used to have trouble with video playback producing sound but no video with a clean install.
It used to need one of the Nvidia driver options changing. I think it was something to do with video overlay but I can't remember exactly.
John.

Funnily enough, my windows media player has decided it doesnt like any form of video play back.
It will play music quite happily but doesnt like videos.
It points me in a direction for my sound card drivers, but the sound works normally on the pc and I dont see any reason why all of a sudden it would choose not to work
Sorry to hi-jack your thread, if its a similar issue perhaps we both might find the answer!

ok, tried a reinstall (repair) with xp, and still no luck
but it did come up with a error about 'nvidia enumerator' on asking for network bus install disk?
no errors in device manager tho.
still goes to 100% resources and flicking black screen when trying to run a video with mediaplayer.
Sounds dont work with mediaplayer, but did with vlc, to a degree (slows right down tho)
