New PC
Looking for a new PC for around £1000 that will run the latest games and I spotted this one on ebay
eBay.co.uk: Ultimate Gaming PC Athlon 5200 8800GTS 250GB 2 GB ddr2 (item 280101620417 end time 14-Apr-07 22:51:57 BST)
Item number: 280101620417
Is this a good buy?
Thanks Andrew

The spec seems reasonably good for the money but bear in mind that it's only got a 30 day warranty.
Having said that, the parts themselves will probably have at least a years warranty from the manufacturer. So if the hard drive died for example you should be able to contact Maxtor directly and get it swapped for free.

That spec is not very good at all.
Two things let it down really badly..the athlon 5200+ isn't bad but it just isn't comparable to the Intel Core 2 Duo's..the e6600 (2.4GHz) intel is actually quicker in most cases that the athlon 6000+ which is 3.0GHz. I don't suppose you want to overclock this machine but they also posses amazing overclocking potnetial.
The RAM is the other. 2GB is fine..but 533 MHz is very slow now. I would want 667Mhz at the very least since 800MHz 2GB kits can now be had for £100.
I've never heard of the PSU manafacturer and this is the one KEY component you do not skimp on because if it blows it can take everything with it.
It's not worth more than £600 to me and i wouldn't buy it even then.
Something like this might be better.
MESH Computers - Award Winning PCs Since 1987 If you remove the monitor and speakers etc..and add 900MHz RAM its around £950 with a 3 year warranty

Specially in the case of Hard drives.... most will have 3+ years warranty on retail where as an OEM version could leave you only entitled to a minimum of 12 month and then again it will be down to original place that sold it to the end user to validate that warranty (they sort you out with another one and then resolve the faulty one with the manufacturer if you are lucky or send it away to the manufacturer and get back to you when it is returned)

Not a problem. If you ever have any trouble with it there is a Mesh Care Forum here
MESH.care@HEXUS - HEXUS.community discussion forums
Mesh do generally have good Customer Service but if you should ever have any problems there are very good people there who can help.

Yep, I'd agree with Mike.
Get a Core 2 Duo based machine. I built myself one based on E6400 2.13G, now runs at 3.6G on cheap DDR2 800 RAM. On Core 2 Duo, 3.2G is easy even on stock cooling, much beyond that is down to messing around a lot with Memory and Voltage settings. So, get an e6400 based machine with DDR2 800 and unless the machine has a really crap motherboard it should still do 3.2G.
One question.
Why buy a PC for gaming?
XBOX360 or PS3 are far better for that than any top class PC. For the cost of SLi graphics cards, you'll get an XBOX360 and a bunch of games to boot.

I haven't seen anything that they have to offer that beats the image quality, scale and mouse control that a PC offers. You don't need SLi for top gaming. A £120 ATI X1950Pro will play everything at 1280 x 1024 and 1600 x 1200.

It's all down to preference isn't it.
I like playing first person shooters and I can't do it with a gamepad..I have tried and failed.
PC is still the best for most types of games ..but there a lot of really enjoyable console games..just nothing I want to play more than once in a while.
I only have a PS2 so I can't comment on the more recent consoles..
