Default External Hard drive - cheapest and best place to buy one?

Hi

I want to back my computers up and this seems an ideal way of doing it.

I have seen some reconditioned ones on ebay but don't fancy that.

Looked at 250gb and 320gb and Amazon are selling some cheap ones.

Anyone recommend anywhere else?

If you want an external HDD then the ones suggested above are good.

I did notice that you said backup your computerS. You may want to consider a more expensive option of a NAS drive. These are external HDD with a network card built into them. This means that you can leave them on all the time if you want under a desk and attached to your network.

That way, any machine can backup at any time. You don't have to go to the hassle of plugging in an external drive.

Example:
Lacie d2 Gigabit Ethernet/USB 2.0 250GB External Hard Drive

The NAS option can be as cheap as an external hard drive - if you buy a separate HDD & caddy and put it together yourself (takes about 30 seconds plus a couple of miniutes to configure it). Shopping around, I managed to buy a complete 250Gb NAS solution for 80 quid. Just use something like Froggle to get the cheapest price for the kit.

Which caddy did you use Chris? All the NAS ones seem to be quite expensive (ignoring some icybox ones which fall apart nice and easy).

Tony.
