OS X and wireless with WEP
One for the mac guru's, Ive got a G4 running 10.2.8 and an imac running tiger. Im trying to setup WEP on my 3com wireless router.
Now if I set the WEP to be PSK (ASCII) I can get the imac to connect and authenticate just fine but the G4 won't. So I thought ok I'll just set it to 128bit hex on the router. Then the G4 connects fine but the imac doesnt! Dont know what the hell is going on!
Any help appeciated

Ah 10.2.8 and wireless. I know for a fact that 10.2.8 won't do WPA, but most forms of WEP it should do.
Make sure when you connect to the wireless network that you have an option to specify the key is 128bit hex. Looking at the Airport tab in the Network Preference Pane it simply says "password" and does not seem to offer any option to change the encryption method, whereas if you have the airport menu visible in the menu bar and go to connect to a network it does give you an option. Nothing like a bit of consistency eh?
So, if you haven't connecting from the Airport menu then first enable "Show Airport Status in menu bar", click "Apply", then select the network from the new little menu in the menu bar and select the "128 bit hex" option and see if you can connect.
If you cannot, then try prefixing the key with a $ and see if that helps. Certainly worth trying that in the Airport tab in the preference pane as well.
Maybe time to take the iMac to 10.3 or 10.4?

Thanks for your help. Yes the powerbook (running Jaguar) does have airport status showing and I can specify if its password or 128bit hex so that is fine using 128bit hex. What I find strange is my shiny new 24" imac running tiger cannot connect via 128bit hex and I did a search on the web and found out about the '$' prefix but it wont let me enter that. But yes maybe upgrade the powerbook to panther.
