Everything has been fine..then today i suddenly find my other XP pcs on my home network can only see the files on the visat pc as read only (even if i uncheck the read only box)

Have you set the permissions of the Vista drive correctly, I know on XP you could set it so either users could just view files or view & modify them...

on XP it was right click on the drive, choose sharing & security and from there you could tick the box to allow users to alter your files.

Hope this helps

Ady.
