Put up a post a couple of days ago about my PC rebooting and took various bits of advice on monitoring it.
I have done
1:A SuperPI test (1M) which it passed
2:Prime95 Torture test for 11 hours and it passed
3:PCWizard monitoring which has these voltages
3.3v (3.33v)
5.0v (5.05v)
12v (11.37v) (possible problem?)
Processor temp 36/37C
Processor temp(diode) 23C

It can reboot when its either running just Azureus (normally left on 24/7) but more frequently when runnig a fairly modern game (Dawn of War).

AMD 3500+.
Winfast motherboard (6100k8ma series)
512mb ram (has a sticker saying 'Buffalo Steed' on it)
Intergrated nvidia 6100 graphics.
Hercules 400w power supply.
Windows XP sp2 'ahem' edition

Computers reboot for three reasons.

1. They are unwell (getting too hot as something has failed).

2. There is a system fault and your system has been set to reboot on a "blue screen"

3. There is a underlining issue - virus or something simular. Techie term....The virus is "killing" or corrupting integral systemk processes that lead to an RPC call that informs the system to shutdown (this is a remote possible as you are probably running an anti virus appplication - if not get a fantastic free one.... avast! antivirus software - computer virus, worm and Trojan protection by ALWIL Software )

If you are running XP.....


Press START, RUN, type in EVENTVWR this will bring up the event log for your computa -

Click "SYSTEM" and then scroll down to when you think it started to go wrong. Also look in the APPLICATION one and look for nasty RED CROSSES - this will explain more.

There are two reasons for a blue screen - Something has failed (hardware) or a software driver needs to be updated.

Remember - the software controls the hardware - if the software is wrong the wheels come off...........

Using the 'EVENTVWR' brought up in the System tab these errors
1:service Control Manager
2:sr
3:cdrom
4:wceusbsh
5:SidebySide
6: Dhcp

I have no idea (apart from cdrom) what these faults are can you or anybody shed ome light on them

 

1. Service Control Manager starts up the internal system stuff (things like explorer, served appications that are registered (AV etc).
2. ........
3. USB Photo device
4. Part of asp.net
6. Network card process of getting an IP address (won't go into it as I'll fill the database in the forum!)

On point 1 - it should tell you what's not loading - but if it isn't loading it shouldn't be a problem.
Point 3 - uninstall it, it's easy to re-install if it doesn't cause an issue.
Point 4 - shouldn't think it was
Point 6 - shouldn't be either...Are you ADSL or IP? (BT style or NTL style)

 

My usb photo device has never been installed (i guess it means my digi camera) as i just connect it via the usb cable to get the photos off it (or am i missing the point?)
Internet is NTL style (now Virginmedia).

I took your advice and changed to avast (and uninstalled my other AV software).

Have u got alot of drives connected? your 12v rail is too low, that might be part of the reason. which might be due to a cheap PSU, as 400W should be plenty if you only have a few drives connected.

 

Only got 1 dvd ram drive (made by NEC) and 1 hard drive (made by excelstor technology j880).
Is there a good make of PSU?

I use a TAGAN 480W. Is totally silent and gets great reviews. Has been 100% rock solid for the last 2 years I have been using it.

Not cheap, but it's a part of the PC you simply CANNOT skimp on IMHO.

 

Cheers guys for your help looks like a new psu will be bought.
Can they be bought from high street or internet only.

 

PC World do them, any pc shop will.

Mine failed, I whipped it out (oo err), tested it, sure enough no voltage, drove into town, bought a new one, drove back, fitted it and it was back up and running in 40 minutes !

Take the old one with you, they are generally a standard fit but sometimes different sizes for various reasons like the type of case, power demands and a lot of brand names can be bespoke shapes to clear other components.

 

Are the pc world ones any good (mine came from novatech) or did i just get a duff one perhaps and are there any particular brands that are better than others (D16GER mentioned TAGAN)
