Hi

I'm using aol broadband and have had no trouble (yet). Basically I couldn't be bothered to change my email address. Previously I was dial-up and now pay £9.99 a month for unlimited downloads with free modem and some filters. Only needed an ethernet card in the old pc (win 98 still!).

You don't have to use the aol browser based on IE. To use a different one, e.g. Mozilla you log in to aol, minimise the window and start Mozilla.

Scoobynet works faster that way. Cheers.

If you use a router, then you need no software at all. Oh and AOL integrates perfectly using an IMAP service in outlook.

Remember AOL are one of only true "unlimited" providers out there

If you speek hindu, you're laughing.

You can use AOL just as a connection, without going through all that normal AOL rubbish and it does work with Outlook

Mart its simple enough:

Open the router in your web browser: e.g. 192.168.1.1 (enter user/pass)

Then enter the following settings:

Connection Protocol: PPPoE
VPI: 0
VCI: 38

Note that sometimes you will be asked for both figures together (VPI/VCI). In that instance, you enter them separated by a comma: 0,38

Username: yourscreenname@aol.com

Password: youraolpassword

MTU Setting: MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) defines the largest data packet size you can transmit in one go across a network. The AOL network runs at an MTU of 1450. Many routers have inbuilt auto-configurations where the hardware identifies that the AOL traffic has an MTU of 1450 and dynamically adjusts. Alternatively you may have to manually change the MTU setting on the modem router.
If the router hardware does not have this facility, the MTU setting can manually be changed on the computer to 1450.
You can change the MTU setting on your computer by using DrTCP. This is a free software utility that is a shortcut to editing your registry. This is available at: broadband help » DrTCP by Broadbandreports.com.

MRU Setting: MRU (Maximum Routing Unit) is required by some modem routers and should be set to the same value as the MTU of 1450.
MSS Setting: MSS (Maximum Segment Size) is required by some modem routers and dynamically adjusts the packet size to fit the MTU. It should be set to 1410.

I use AOl with outlook.

I've posted this before, but in case you missed it:

Create and configure a new AOL email account in Outlook

1. Launch Outlook.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Email Accounts.
3. Choose the Add a new email account option by clicking it, then click the Next button.
4. Choose the IMAP option by clicking it, then click the Next button.
5. In the Your Name: box, type your name as you wish it to appear on outgoing email.
6. In the Email Address: box, type your full AOL email address; for example, JSmith@aol.com.
7. In the User Name: box, type your AOL screen name, for example, JSmith.
8. In the Password: box, type your AOL password.
9. In the Incoming mail server (IMAP): box, type imap.aol.com.
10. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP): box, type smtp.aol.com.
11. Click the More Settings button.
12. Click the Outgoing Server tab.
13. Click the My outgoing server requires authentication box to place a tick in it.
14. Choose the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option by clicking it, then click the Advanced tab.
15. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP): box, type 587, then click the OK button.
16. Click the Next button.
17. Click the Finish button.

I think you'll need to load their software initially to setup your account, you know, to get a screen name/email address, but after that you don't need it.

None whatsoever.

True unlimited broadband access. No fair usage policy whatever the hell that means, there are three of us in our house, using two computers and never heard a thing from aol about usage.

Im on AOL and have no problems using any P2P

I dont use the AOL browser any more. They now have a AOL dialler which you can use to connect although i think you need the browser installed to get it.

Its just been taken over by carfone warehouse though hasnt it

Allot of people are expecting them to start implimenting download limits etc

Because we are not sheep that take the word of others without trying something ourselves first. I have had an uncapped connection without even one drop using AOL and have never had to install their software. I can always get through to them on the phone and they are one of the only true unlimited servers left.

If I want to change it takes seconds to type my mac cod into pipex etc, so why would he not want to do it ?

AOL - excellent - free Netgear router with wireless capability - one of my maachine has AOL software on & the other hhas nothing at all belonging to AOL. Lowest BB speed is now 2Mb and as the other guys say no download limits at all...

Give it a go - the routers worth £50 -if you're getting £9.99 a month you can't go wrong

dont tell them all that else theyll all join then thatll make the lines slower (more people higher contension lower speed - im sure someone will tell me wrong) but let those that slag them off for some unknown reason as they have no clue have their d/l limits & p2p blocking...

They seem to be much better now, however I've sworn off ever using AOL again since I ill-advisedly used them for dial-up access 12years ago lol...
