Anyone got an MP3 hi-fi??
Hi guys, I'm looking for a better solution to listen to MP3s in the living room.
Had been using a Soundbridge, but had network probs, so looking for an all in one job.
Anyone know of a cheap mini/micro hifi that can accept a hard drive? I've two PC drives (one 40GB, the other 120GB) that are just sat around, and I'd like to put my MP3 collection on one of them.
I realise that some MP3 stereos have a USB port - am I right in thinking that the USB port won't provide enough power - I have a powered enclosure, would that work? Had loads of probs getting a laptop encolsure to work with a car HU USB port - sold the drive in the end...
Failing that, would ANY size memory stick work? I've seen some 8GB sticks for £75...
Ipod not an option as I don't want to constantly remove it from the car
Ideally don't want to spend much over £200 - it seems like we only listen to music in the car these days

I got myself one of these
Media Player
It connects to your PC either via USB or LAN so you can download your music files. It then plugs into your Hi-Fi / TV / Surround Sound and plays directly with files showing on your TV screen and music playing through your sound system. It will also allow you to save video and photos
I suppose its like a grown up mp3 player
Dead chuffed with it
It saves having 1000s of CDs in your lounge as well

I not sure it as simple as putting a harddrive in an enclosure and plugging it in via usb - the usb ports on amps (i think and will happily be corrected) will only support other audio devices ie MP3 players.
An 8gb memory stick will not contain that much music say 100 cds encoded at 198 mp3. You will probably want better quality sound in your house then your car because of all the ambient noise
If you have spare harddrives you can get an enclosure to allow attachment to your music system (as the media player does)
Alternatively a DVD player or a sound system that has a CD player that can play DVDs you can get 50 cds encoded at 192 mp3 on a DVD
Hard Drive Enclosure this may do the trick as you can use your old drives and still leave some pennies for a sound system

The Soundbridge was similar - hate doing it over wireless as it means having a PC switched on.

Squeezebox infinitely better IMO, but you are right about having to have the PC on, although there is the Squeezenetwork and it supports internet radio, lastfm, pandora, rhapsody etc so there are ways of using it without the PC on all the time. It also supports the dedicated ReadyNAS stations that run the slimserver s/w instead of a PC

A modchipped Xbox really makes for a great media centre device, capable of playing/storing all media formats and connecting into your audio and visual systems. I was looking for a DVD player capable of playing Divx/Xvid formats when someone on here suggested an Xbox - it cost me 60 quid to buy the Xbox/bits.
For your application, you'd need to install the larger hard drive as well, but this is well documented.
End result; a media centre capable of playing pretty much all formats thrown at it, that can also browse the internet and share (or access) files on your computer (if you wanted to). Oh, and it plays games too

Got a 360 now, so I guess that is out.
