Help with netgear router and xbox 360 live???
Bought a router on saturday netgear wgt624, wanting to set up 2 xbox360's in each of my son's rooms, set up one of the xbox's just to try in the livingroom, no problem worked fine, as ethernet cable too short to reach son's bedroom . Yesterday made up 2 ethernet cables (using proper kit, tested them both fine) to run to each of the bedrooms rebooted everything, on one of the xbox's i get a message saying not connected ( nothing wrong with ethernet it's been tested ). The other xbox tells me its wired but fails the IP test. I've checked the dhcp and it is set to enable. Anyone know what i'm doing wrong? it also mentions something about shared ip address.
Cheers Carlos

You should disable DHCP IMO and just assign your own IP addresses.
I used 10.0.0.2 onwards, and just assigned different IP's to my PS2 and Xbox when I had them hooked up at the old house. Say 10.0.0.60 for 360 1, and 10.0.0.70 for 360 2.

You'd need to set a static ip on the XBOXs. Turn on your 360 and go to the dashboard, go over to the "System" Blade and select "Network Settings". Under the "Network" Blade, select "Edit Settings",
You will now be presented with the basic network settings for your 360. From here, you need to highlight the first section labeled "IP Settings" and select it,
From this screen, choose "Manual",
- Linksys
- IP Address : 192.168.1.250
- D-Link
- IP Address : 192.168.0.250
- Netgear
- IP Address : 192.168.0.250

10 or 192, either works, just 10's are easier to type into stuff
Carlos, in your router there will be options to disable DHCP, and then set your own range of IP addresses, so you could set from 192.168.1.0 up to 192.168.1.255, something along those lines.
As pimmo says, you then just set each Xbox to its own IP address within that range.
I'm no expert either, this is just the way I managed it when I set my router up.

Thanks for the info chapps, my head's done in i've been on the phone all day to my network provider and microsoft still no joy. The first person i spoke to from NTL said i had to register my router to my set top box, when i tried i couldnt even get on the web page , so I calls them back the other person i spoke to said i didnt need to register every thing was fine on there end and to ring microsoft, so rang them couldnt hardely understand a word she was saying, but she said i had to go on to dashboard, edit settings set ip to auto, additional settings enter username and password done all this still not work. I GIVE UP

Note that for live to work properly, you also have to open up some ports on your firewall, (specifically UDP / TCP 88 and 3074). That's where the static ip addresses come in handy as you can limit the opened ports to those specific ips.

Hi, just an update. Finally worked out the problem last night, don't think you's will believe me when i tell you. As i qouted on first post trying to sort 2 set up's for xbox 360's, couldnt figure out why the xbox's would work if brought downstairs, but upstairs it wouldnt, also couldnt understand how one would get as far as saying wired and the other saying disconnected, so last night i got some cat 5 cable off a mate, ( about 40m ) tried it in the living room wouldnt connect, so i shortened it about half way tried it again, said wired but would go no further, shortened it by another meter and it works no problem.
The only thing is it looks like i've now got 2 washing lines running through my living room up the stairs into the bedrooms but at least my two boys are happy.

Have a look here...
TMB FAQs - Ethernet Questions
What is the maximum length of Ethernet cable runs?
For Solid wire conductors.
10BaseT, 100BaseT, 1000BaseT; 100 meter (328 feet)
For Stranded wire conductors (Patch cable).
10BaseT, 100BaseT, 1000BaseT; 10 meter (33 feet)
ProPlex PCCAT5P and PCCAT5EP, although having stranded conductors perform electrically as per the Solid conductor Ethernet cables @ 100M, (328ft).
If you are having trouble with only 40m, then either something is causing interference, or you are using really cheap and nasty cable.

It must be interferance from some where, the cable i run in originally was a more expensive cable cat6, the one i'm using at the mo is cheaper cat5.
The cat6 i run in, goes through bay window ceiling, along gable front, up through garage then into loft and dropped down into individual bedrooms.
cat5 is exel, cat 6 is connectix cabling systems-4pr utp solid ls0h if that means anything.
