Mother wants a desktop............
....................... What do I get her?
I know very little about pc's apart from how to check the history and cookies to see if the other half has been downloading ****
Mother has our old laptop and has her heart set on a desktop pc in the sales. Thing is, she knows less about computers than me.
She would like Word and Excel not Works (they taught her Word at night school) A TV card would be good and DVD player etc
She would also like a printer/scanner type thing.
Any ideas peeps,
Thank you
Vicki

Just make sure that Word & Excel (so office really + you get outlook) are part of the deal. It's a few hundred pounds each if you buy afterwards.

Being honest, you need a budget to start from as it could range from £500 to £1500. Anything (decent) you buy now should come with a free vista upgrade (until March).
Few things to look out for in the spec lists to keep it future proof:
Dual core 64bit processor (Anything labelled core2 duo )
1 gigabyte of RAM (check speed, should be at least DDR2 667 ).
SATA II hard disc of at least 200gig
The rest of teh bits you can pick and choose what you like for your budget.
As for printer/scanners/all in one, you have a choice of cheap now but expsnive cartidges (HP or Lexmark) Or more expensive printer , but cheaper cartridges (high end Canon or Epson- with 6 or 8 seperate ink tanks - one for each colour) . I'm personally a canon man, as I have a phobia of Epsons (past experience) and I've not been very impressed with HP's latest offerings of flimsy all-in-ones.
As an alternate to office: You could get her to try OpenOffice.org: Home It's free and very similar to microsoft office. Will save you nigh on £80 and stick two fingers up at microsoft
Helpful Note:
If you install openoffice: After installing it and getting it working, load writer, click "tools" -> "options" -> "load/save" -> "general"
And in the drop down boxes for "default file type" select the office XP equivelent for text, speadsheet and presentation, then click ok. Then any files done on it are compatible with office

She has a chunky monitor from my old pc, and keyboard, mouse and speakers. She has a printer and scanner but i think she would be well please with an all in one printer.

Got her a basic ACER pc and monitor with xp media
I can't get it to connect to dial up tho I've got some strange feeling it doesn't have a modem, any ideas
Doesn't really matter as I have twisted her arm into having cable broadband.
She sent her 1st email with attatched photos today
