Default Graphics card advice please?

Just purchased some new bits n bobs to upgrade my current PC to a new Intel Dual Core 2 Duo processor and now trying to decide on what graphics card to get...

I'm not too bothered if it’s an Nvidia card or ATI, although I have always had Nvidia cards in the past and never had any probs.

I am looking at PCI-E cards and my budget is up to £200 max (prefer if I could get a reasonable one but cheaper if possible). I would like to use it to play the latest games so it needs to be a half decent one but at the same time I am not spending £300+ on the latest DirectX10 cards etc.

From looking on sites such as tomsardware.co.uk etc they seem to list many different types of cards, most of which now have newer model out just to make things even more confusing!

I have seen sites recommend the 7900 GT, GTO (slighter over £200 tho) ATI x1950 Pro etc etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations on cards that you have recently installed or can help me narrow down to at least a few cards?

Thanks

I've just ordered a load of bits for going core 2 duo, and I decided to go for an ATI x1950 Pro after having several generations of Nvidia cards, and almost chosing a Nvidia 7900GS based card.

I'll let you know how things look once they are up and running.

John.

I bought the 7950gt and its a nice card, not quite top of the range but over clockable and runs everything sweet.

I always go with the second rated card. Cheaper and can be geared up if required

Hows about this one - MSI Radeon X1950PRO 512MB GDDR3 PCIE Dual DVI VIVO (RX1950PROVT2D51) can get this through work too so will be fair bit cheaper than on dabs

Which ATI Card did you get John? The one above is from MSI. I have also came across a "Ultimate" edition card - Sapphire Technology Ultimate Radeon X1950Pro 256MB GDDR3 Dual DVI TVO (11095-00-50R) which is suppose to have a better cooling solution on it as there were a number of people having problems with the pro cards getting too hot and shutting your PC down.

I think I am going to go for an X1950 Pro as they are some bit cheaper than the 7900 GT cards etc and give similar performance, just not sure which one as there are several different variations from different manufacturers??

I got the Sapphire card from Scan: Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

It's quite a weighty beast, and comes with loads of cables.

I've got they system up and running, but haven't got anything installed yet, so I can't say how it performs.

Ah yes but which version of the 7900 are you talking about? GS, GT, GTX?
